i was waiting for a os x gpu client before i did it. seems much more efficient than cpu folding

i7 920 is 2.66 ghz stock but I have it OC'd to 3.8 ghz.

oh ok nice. yeah you could try to push it to 4.0 ghz. it's always nice to start with a 4 :)

well from what i've read, that just isn't the case. GPUs use much more power than CPUs. the most efficient for the points is CPU folding (bigadv). the only advantage GPU folding has is that certain work units are only GPU, so if you are looking to work towards a certain disease, this might mean something to you

yes please. and let us know the other hardware (mobo, ram, hard drive, gpu) and what operating system.
Guess I won't be telling tonight....

But anyways what I did have,

EVGA X58 SLI LE
6gb(3x 2gb) Corsair XMS3
500gb(was in the process of cloning to a 75gb WD Raptor)
2x GTX 460 768mb (OC shader)
Windows 7

If I was folding (don't see the point. I tried it for a few days and didn't see the point.), I'd be using this computer I built back in Jan '10.

Antec 900 two
4GB 1333 ddr3 RAM
Gigabyte P55A - UD3
GTX 260 892MB
1TB HDD

Been able to hit 3.8Ghz without changing the voltage very much. Maybe 1.25v. Didn't see the need to overclock just to see Facebook. Stock speeds are plenty fast for me now. Might bring it up gradually.

I hardly use that computer though, after I got my MBP :(

well the point of folding is to help scientists research cures for diseases, like cancer. please tell me why you think there's no point in that?

It's for a great cause. Putting CPU/GPU cycles to good use. The whole points thing makes it kinda competitive and lures people in. lol.

Watch out for that motherboard. My 950 ran fine OC'd but committed suicide with the beastie 970.

i agree.

thanks, i will. i just have a 930 in it. and right now it's not OC'd that much

So with the announcement of the new MBPs I've decided to wait for the redesign of the computer slated to take place next spring and build a new desktop now. Specs will be as follows:

Lian Li PC-A05NB case
Intel 2600k
MSI P67A-GD65 (argh hurry up everyone with getting the new mobos out there already! I don't even care about SATA II!)
8GB DDR3 1600
AMD 6970 (chose mainly because it won't make the lights dim as much as the Nvidia competitors when it runs)
Corsair AX850 PSU
WD Caviar Black SATA III HD
Blu Ray optical combo drive (already have)

I was going to put a 60GB SSD in there as the system drive but after reading a bunch of reviews I've decided that the reliability just isn't there for me yet.

This should be a giant boost over my current 2005 build desktop pc (and surprisingly slightly cheaper actually).

Awesome! Are you going to OC it?

But of course! Should be able bump up the turbo multiplyer to hit 4.4 on stock air from what I've read, and let it scale back to stock clocks when idle, if it's ever idle haha. We'll see how that performs (and what the noise level is on stock air) and go from there. Everything I've read says the stock cooler for the 2600k is overbuilt by intel purposefully to allow for overclocking.

It's uses will be: Encoding blu ray and dvd rips, and rapid re-compressing of video for my phone (all of this should be 10x faster than it is on my current MBP C2D). Playing games; hello Civ V maxed out and Portal 2, BF3, FSX, etc (and Minecraft at a billion fps). And of course folding with the rest of the spare clock ticks.

Something wrong is going on. My 970 is only doing half of what it should be doing. Glad I got a snow day today so I can mess with it :D Basically only getting 2k more PPD than my 950 but on 4 more threads and higher cock?

As techfreak85 says, have you checked the -smp argument and what does task manager show?
Another couple of ideas:
Do you have enough memory for 12 threads? Is it running triple channel?
Is this with the same WU type? I think its the 6701 (smp) and 2684 (bigadv) units that are much slower than the normal ones (eg 6900 on bigadv).
Also, the new 6.34 client and A5 core came out this week - are you still using the same one as before?

Hope that helps
Rob

Running tri-channel @ 1600mhz (2gb x3). Have -smp 11 flag. Task manager shows 90-93% like it should while all the cores are at 100%.

Haven't downloaded the new client yet as I didn't know a new one got released. Will do that tomorrow when I get some time.

let us know how it does with the new client. also, make note of which work unit that you are folding, as stated before the 2684's are tough units.

Upgraded to 6.34. Working on a P6900 and will update with TPF/PPD once I complete a few steps.

Update:
ETA: 1d 12h 54min, TPF: 22:22, PPD: 58165, Credit: 90324

I look like this now ~~~> :D

I'm now at 81k PPD with my 2 GPU and 1 SMP clients. The 970 was an awesome upgrade.
