A week ahead of Apple's iPad media event, Engadget revises its claims about we can expect to see at Yerba Buena.

Engadget's previous claims included an SD card slot and a "super high resolution" display for the next iPad. Those claims generated a fair amount of discussion surrounding the possibility of a Retina display for the iPad 2. The site is backtracking on some of those claims now, saying that "engineering issues" have caused a change of plans:
Notably, that SD card slot and higher resolution display won't make it into the new model (the latter we'd been hearing rumblings about for a little while). What's the cause of the switch? Well our sources weren't crystal clear on the exact reasons, but the gist of what was explained to us centered around vague "engineering issues" which may have forced some changes at the eleventh hour.
Engadget stands by its sources and says we will still be hearing about a faster processor (A5) with more RAM (512MB). A FaceTime camera, of course, is still expected and likely a rear one as well.

The site does reveal that we'll likely hear details of iOS 5 next week which will be available to the public by summer alongside the iPhone 5. No other details there, but we should hear more on March 2nd.

Thats way too modest for the ipad refresh i defiantly expect more in order for it to better compete with the andriod 3 / web os/ rimm tablets.

Fine! No 1gb ram.

I'll definitely pass. The 'retina' display rumoured in the next iPad was the main thing that was motivating my purchase. Looks like I'll have to wait 6-12 months for that though in which case my interest may wane.

Makes sense, I was thinking about it, and the only thing missing in Apples line up is an iOS device that is VERY fast, as in perfectly stutter free with ANY game, any app etc.

iPad 2's job should be to fill this hole.

Doesnt anybody else notice that one side has few dots (pixels) while the other side has double the dots?!? I think we will get the retina display still!

512MB of RAM is pretty much expected, if kind of disappointing, since going from 256MB to 1GB is a very big jump in terms of fragmentation.

Engineering problems, ie. yield stopping Retina Display introduction makes sense, but what type of engineering problem can prevent the incorporation of a SD slot?

You right. It's "only" twice as fast, twice ram, 4 times graphics, lighter, thinner, two added cameras, gyro, new OS.

While I agree 1gb would be nice iOS does an excellent job of memory management and it does with 512mb of ram what others do with 1gb of ram.

True, but many complained that the iPad should've come with 512MB originally..... then we'd already be up to 1GB with the refresh. ;)

the ipad is Ok with 256, so 512 will be even better. But since it's going to be out for a year, it wouldn't be bad to get ahead of the curve a bit with 1 GB. Not saying it's necessary, but it would be nice.

Aside from that, thinner and lighter would be at the top of my request list.

I don't see why everybody is so upset with these specs it seems to be in line with most other tablets and the only real thing its missing is the Retina Display(meaningless marketing tool) and to tell the truth that that rumor just got out of hand. However I am rather hoping that iOS 5 destroys Honeycomb and brings iOS ahead of the game.

It's very possible that the only updates will be cameras, a faster processor, and more RAM.

The 3GS improvements over the 3G were basically that, right?

You can have 1GB of RAM, or you could have a decent battery life.

You cannot have both.

Sigh

im totally with you on being skeptical about what this guy says. But he does have a point, I hadnt noticed it but he is right one side is very clearly more dotted than the other. Thats definitely not a printing error. So idk, although I find retina iPad 2 very unlikely.

If a retina display can’t be made affordably AND available in guaranteed MASSIVE quantities, then that’s not bad engineering, just reality. It will be awesome when it does happen. I believe it will, and I wish it were now... but I want an iPad regardless, and I won’t be waiting until fall... or winter... or next spring... to see when a retina display becomes practical.

It's very possible that the only updates will be cameras, a faster processor, and more RAM.

Yes, that’s possible—and it’s enough to get me to buy! Refine an already great device.

But we’ve seen case leaks from companies who seemed pretty sure of their sources, so I’m still hoping for a new (thinner?) shape as well. Probably with a new speaker. MAYBE with some new connector or slot added... but frankly, what I do with an iPad will be almost entirely wireless anyway, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that.

And I really want iOS 5 with those new 4-finger gestures, please :)

Enagdget is doing backflips on their previous predictions, so why should we listen to them now..?

Man, I should start my own 'predicition' website - I couldn't do any worse.

At least the 2nd is not too far away; we shall see.

no iPhone 5 no iOS 5. Please don't start adding new rumors on this one. this is just the iPad 2 (the same machine you own today with a camera..... that's it.) worry for the iPad 3... (it will be the revision B) ok?
