Because on the internet, seems like you can get 16gb of flash memory for about $25.

Don't forget it's not the same flash memory as you find in a USB stick or SD card. Instead of comparing prices to those, compare prices of actual SSDs. I see that an average 32gb SSD is about $100, so Apple's price is only twice the going rate

Not too bad by Apple standards.

"On the internet" you can also get pretty cheap 9.7" LCD screens.. I have seen some very good deals on LiIon batteries on eBay. And aluminum which is used in iPad enclosure is DIRT cheap when you buy in bulk.

Sorry I lost my train of thought.. the point you were trying to make was what exactly?

That's how Apple and other companies make more money. They have an entry level model at a tempting price then another model with more memory or horsepower that they charge a premium for. (i.e. their profit margin is better on the higher models.)

Do you really think that leather seats and a navigation system (aka GPS) cost Ford or GM $3000? No, but enough people will pay that amount that it is worthwhile for them price it there. Ditto with memory sizes in iPads/iPods etc.

They use Apple's special super duper "magic" RAM. Just believe. Just believe.

My point was that I guess Steve Jobs doesn't want my money. Looks like I'll be waiting for the iPad 3.

What upsets me is that its $100 to jump from 16GB to 32GB and only $100 more to go from 32GB to 64GB.

How come the first $100 only gets you 16GB more, but the second $100 gets you 32GB more?

I think you'll be waiting for the iPad 14 or so. Whatever comes out next year, it may have 32GB on the base model, but then it's going to be $100 more for 64 and $100 above that for 128. And people like you are going to be just as up in arms about it.

There is a magical 'double' switch inside the iPad that costs $100 per notch to switch. Pay $100 and you get one notch, pay $100 more and you get the second notch too. :)

I'd say that it's because they're margins are fairly low on the 16GB model. If it weren't for the higher margins on the 32 and 64 gig models they couldn't hit that $499 point for the entry model.

Are you serious? So you think Apple should sell everything at their cost? They don't deserve to make money off their creation?
Let me ask you this. What would happen if they were forced to do just that, not make a profit only selling at cost? Where would the motivation to create new ideas come from?
Capitalism, it just works.

Its business. I dont understand why people would expect them not to charge $100. I also agree to the poster who discussed buying a 9.7 inch screen and aluminum. - make it your self.

You just blew my mind.

So, does engineering get exponintially easier? If it's $100 in engineering to add 16gb of storage to an existing 16gb ipad, does it then only cost $50 per 16gb chunk to add 32gb to a 64gb ipad?

This whole engineering and capitalism thing is blowing my mind.

I was wrong, I guess Steve Jobs DOES want my money. Anyone at the Gateway that can tell me if there's any Black 16gig's in stock?

Its called business, every company does it. There was an overflow of these threads when Apple sold bumpers for the iPhone 4 (before they were given for free) and everyone was pissed that they were asking $29 for a $1 or less piece of plastic.

i agree with most on this. apple has been playing their consumers from day one on this. they will continue to do it as long as they continue to sale. expandable memory may become a selling point in the future when competition is better and the avg dumb consumer becomes wiser.
