unable to unarchive (error 1 - operation not permitted)

hi
i have a question that was sort of touched on in mac forums but never solved for someone else back in 2007

i have been scouring the net to find a remedy to my problem.

i have mac os 10.4.11

i have a zipped file (final cut pro) that i am trying to open and when i try to open it i get a "unable to unarchive (error 1 - operation not permitted)" message.
i followed the guidelines from the old thread for the other person i repaired permissions but when i tried to download onyx it told me the the onyx version needs a higher OS (10.5 i beleive) than i have and other efforts to find the onyx for my mac have failed.

i have also downloaded x slimmer and Xserve raid driver for people that use final cut pro, i thought that this also might help

can you please give me some help so i can start to play with final cut pro.

Sounds like you have a corrupted ZIP file. Best bet might be to try an alternative unZIPper to see if it'll have any luck. First choice ought to be Zipeg because it's free. The link goes to its web site where you can download it.

The other alternative is StuffIt. You should have StuffIt expander somewhere on your hard drive, probably in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder. Here is the StuffIt download page.

Try from the terminal, you also get that error if the zip has a password.

I find that The Unarchiver works well on Zip archives that the built in unarchiver doesn't understand (giving, among other things, the error you got).

I think it's related to Cyberduck

Are you using Cyberduck to retrieve the file that you are trying to unarchive?

I've found that most of my files get corrupted either when I upload or download them with Cyberduck, it's being doing that for a few versions now, I switched to Fetch and everything works fine now.

I reported the issue to the Cyberduck guys but they have released three new updates since then and the error is still there.

I am experiencing the same problem here, i have tried using all linked unarchievers but none of them worked.

How exactly do i use the terminal to unzip my files?

It's easy. Type unzip, then a space, then drag the file to the terminal window. Press Return to execute the command. I'm not sure where it'll unzip to, though - perhaps the current folder the Terminal is in?

i used terminal to unzip after getting this error message and it was successful! it put the file in my user home directory.

The terminal solution finally also worked for me after trying Archive Utility, Stuffit, and The Unarchiver (all unsuccessfully). Dumped it in my Home folder too. Thanks for the advice!

You might want to look in the Console too.

It appears to me that for some reason the unzip utility doesn't tidy up it's act when things go wrong and the unzip then continues to fail because of pre-existing files.
See attached screen shot (from the Console) that shows underlying issue.
In my case it was a folder called
/private/var/folders/ys/...

I was having the same issue error 1. I found the Stuffit in my Applications folder. It worked! I put it in my Dock bc I get this error about 50% of the time. Thanks so much!

Solution i found

I got this from the app store 7z-rar did the job for me

Error 1 message when unarchiving files

Hi All,

have tried all the suggestions here & still can not open my files. The terminal trick was the last attempt & still could not win Did Unstuffit, tried another Mac still no joy. Any other suggestions please?

What error did you see when you tried the unzip program?

This worked for me

I found that for me I was getting this error message when I was trying to unzip the file that was on the USB key.

However, I dragged-and-dropped the file onto my computer, and then I was able to unzip.

I'm guessing it's because the person who gave me the files uses a PC, and thus the USB stick was formatted for PC and wouldn't allow me to unzip and create a folder on the stick.

Further help needed

i have tried the terminal window and it did create an empty folder with my zip file name in my user folder.
during the process the following error message was indicated in the terminal window:
"unsupported compression method 99"

Any idea why this is and how i can bypass it??!!
