In my apartment at college, i can view like 50 or so networks. but only a few are notable

"AMBERALERT"
"DeathByMint"
"FREAKY"
"GrenadeFreeZone"
"homecooking"
"lifeisbeautiful"
"ournetwork"

i go to penn state, and im surprised there was only 1 that had anything to do with penn state, their network is NittanyLions.

Mine is quite simply called "01010000010011110101001001001110" - Geeky I know, but it gets CS peoples attention and a laugh, while the rest of the world is confused.

My routers name is World Command, the macs are Colossus and Guardian. Maybe one in 100 people get the reference.

LOL, thanks for the router name.

My Linux server is colossus.

My old (defunct) Windows machine was guardian. (Had to make Windows the Russian one...)

My router is DrForbin.

My Windows VM on my Macbook is WOPR (switching movies...)

My Macbook is Emerac. (REALLY old movie, extra points to identify!)

There used to be some pretty creative uucp node names. (uucp still exists?) You needed to specify the full path, so every machine along the route. Here in San Diego we had (or have?) ihnp4!bang!crash, which actually read:

"ihnp4 bang bang bang crash"

Because the ! character is pronounced "bang".

One of my neighbor's WiFi nodes is called "SueMeBit#$" (change the last letters...). I assume a nasty divorce.

I think it would be fun to drive around town and create a script that all it does is scan for wifi networks and saves them to a text file. Be funny to see all the different ones.

iStumbler, macStumbler, kisMac.

You can have them save all the networks they see.

With a coffee-can antenna (and an external, USB WiFi adapter), I can get about 250 signals off my balcony. Not all at once - I have to point it around in all directions. But any of this software will save everything it sees.
