It will be computer free. Meaning iCloud will backup, deliver all past purchases, etc I don't see the actual sync method changing from this beta. I expect you still have to make one tethered connection in order to say "this is the iTunes I want to sync with". Otherwise how will they manage it? If you set it up from the phone what's to keep me from just go to a random persons house and syncing all their data? Or if it is managed from the computer what is to keep me from polluting your phone with crap? Unless they add some convoluted passcode system, I see the initial wired hook up being required of you want to sync with a computer.

Re-read my post - I think it will be tied to Apple/iCloud ID. It makes sense to utilise local backup, both from Apple and the user point of view. My way seems like the most secure and simple.

Not sure if my post didnt quote it right (on my phone so I'm not going to go back and find it) but I was replying to a user saying this wireless sync will help the fact that 50% of iPhones brought into the apple store have never been synced, therefore they have no backup. I meant to imply that the wireless sync will not help with that due to still having to set it up at first. ICloud will help making sure users have backups available. Not sure if it will really help since I foresee most users that are not capable of syncing their phone, being capable of setting up iCloud. Maybe apple stores will do it for them?

I'm not sure if you've used iOS 5, but there is a setup screen when the device is first turned on that goes through the activation of iCloud. It would appear likely that a larger proportion of users will have iCloud activated.

Any confirm reports that current streaming apps are still FUBAR'ed in iOS 5.0 beta 2? Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO GO, and Pandora would not stream or even launch in iOS 5.0 beta 1.

Confirmed fixed (iPhone 4 GSM Firmware):

- Default wallpapers are back
- AirVideo (latest version) works!
- Lock screen notifications (alerts) look different. Screenshots to follow.

... more to come

Your right I forgot about the iCloud setup when I first installed 5.
I still see a tethered connection being needed. What if I have 5 computers in my house all with the same iCloud id? Not sure why we are wasting our time though, haha. Like connecting a cable once even matters.

Pandora was fine on b1 but the others were borked. Checking shortly.

Downloaded everything and when I connected my iPhone to update got this message. Same thing with iPad. Anyone knows why I'm getting that?

from the RELEASE notes:

itunes for the iOS5.0b2 can NOT sync with devices that run iOS5.0b1

You have to follow the following steps (if you want to keep your backup):
1. before installing iTunes, sync/backup your device with iTunes for iOS5.0b1

2. once backup finished, you can install anything

3. install 5.0b2 on your device

4. restore from backup

If you want to keep the setup of your device, uninstall itunes and reinstall the old one and follow the steps above. Other option is you start as a 'new device' and reinstall all the apps and settings.

All of the bugs I noticed are fixed in this build (as far as I can tell, so far) ... except that my Photos are in complete disarray. Like, no order what-so-ever.

My Music seems perfect now so I might just stick with this build until GM, unless some super cool feature comes out.

sounds good - now I only hope the battery life got better too (we all should now if 24hours if it got better)

Plugged in?

"Be sure your device is plugged into a power source when performing Wireless syncs."

Umm...why? If I have enough battery power, I should be able to do it. (Maybe it needs more instantaneously than the battery can provide?)

So, now I either have to plug the cable into the computer ... or the cable into the charger. This is not an improvement, and I'd probably rather just do the computer since it would be faster.

You can initiate a WiFi sync manually, without being plugged in. It'll only automatically do it if it's plugged in.

First attachment shows the new bubble you get when you receive a new notification (when the device is asleep). If you don't respond to the notification, you get the standard (but slightly modified) lock screen next time you wake the device up.

Well, beta 2 is worse than beta 1. Home screen icons are screwed up and Safari bookmarks bar is screwed up too.

You can still do it while not plugged in - you just have to start it manually. This is probably just a warning so that people don't complain that wired things happen if it runs out of juice while synching (after all, it is still beta)

Weird. I installed iTunes 10.5b2 on my MBP (from version 10.3) and successfully backed up my ipad2 which was running iOS5b1 before installing the beta2 with no issues. I normally do all my updating on my mini, but I'm away from home so I connected my iPad to my MBP for the first time ever.

Is plugging in the phone a requirement for manually starting wireless syncing or just recommended? The video blocks the bottom of the phone so I can't tell.

Can someone please confirm if the iPod still sounds lie crap with the bass booster setting on with headphones? I want to install this but not if the iPods still sounds crappy (I'm a heavy user) Thanks :D
