Electronic Arts is acquiring casual gaming giant PopCap, maker of Plants vs. Zombies and Bejeweled, among others. EA is paying out $650 million in cash, $100 million in stock and up to $550 million in earn-outs for hitting financial milestones in the next few years.
"EA and PopCap are a compelling combination," said EA CEO John Riccitiello. "PopCap's great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA's momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business. EA's global studio and publishing network will help PopCap rapidly expand their business to more digital devices, more countries, and more channels."

"We picked EA because they have recast their culture around making great digital games," said David Roberts, CEO of PopCap. "By working with EA, we'll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience."
The press release notes that PopCap games have been downloaded more than 1.5 billion times and Bejeweled, the flagship franchise, has sold more than 50 million units.

Looks like we won't be seeing Gamecenter comparability for Bejeweled and Bookworm now. I HATE EA with a passion.

I don't think I've ever said "NO" so loud in response to an article.

Say hello to PvZ 2. It will be 3 times as easy as number 1 and with only half as much effort from the development team. All but the first 5 plants will require in app purchase ( at a pound a plant ) and the app its self will set you back £10

well so much for those fun games. EA will kill them like they did with other companies they bought up. For example Maxias went from making great stuff to crap.

Sim City was really and then EA took over and it started going down hill quickly.

Just like simcity, no more updates to PvZ. I avoid EA stuff now. They have shown that they don't stand behind their programs.

I think EA makes Scrabble for iOS, which I do enjoy, but all of the other EA games I've bought during their 99 cent sales blow.

NBA Jam, Fight Night, Monopoly, Battleship -- all good EA games I've played in the last month or so. I get the trendy thing to do is hate on EA, but those games I've thought are really well done. Hopefully it's a sign of things to come.

My only real complaint with them now is their steadfast refusal to integrate GameCenter. Leaderboards & Multiplayer are all that's missing from their games.

This will be a merge and the new company will be called Pop Arts / electronic Cap Games.

I play EA games all the time, but they've ruined some games that I really enjoyed.. so I'm not hating completely.. Also they are often riddled with bugs and lately they've been making console ports, which means they aren't optimized for pc's :(..

I think EA is really just out to make the most money they can..

Actually the trendy thing to do now is hate on Activision. Hating on EA is very 2005/2006.

Both EA and Microsoft games do not make art... They are just cheap lazy game factories. Valve is where its at, along with some others.

I was really interested in PopCap's new 4th & Battery division that focused on smaller, indie-type gameplay. Will this new division survive the EA giant? I sure hope so. Unpleasant Horse is a good start.

At least EA will get off the couch and release some Bejeweled games for the iPad.
