I am sure you not the only one, but you are the minority. Consumers as a whole are abandoning the physical media, and buying content digitally. I am very glad Apple is leading the push to abandon old media, rather than continuing the old ways.
Even if you still buy DVDs - it's a very easy process to rip them into your iTunes library with an external drive at home. Then when you're on the road, you have a convenience of having your content available at a click of a mouse, as opposed to shuffling around optical disks. You know, the 21st century type stuff..
I hate when people say Apple is forcing something on them. If people are still using CDs, either use older Apple hardware that has them built in, or buy an external drive.
Apple is not coming to your house and taking your CD-drive away.
They are free to do as they please with the new product releases.
Buy the USB stick for $70, or burn a Lion DVD after downloading Lion once.

How easy to rip DVDs into iTunes? I thought it was quite complicated due to all the built-in menus and extras in the DVDs I have like Doctor Who boxsets and you know.
Though it's nice having it all on a hard drive.
I get the SuperDrive omission from a strategic standpoint, but it sucks for people who wanted to use it as a media center computer. I think there is money to be made in developing a DVD or bluray peripheral that sits underneath the mini with the same form factor.
Take the DVD you own, and put it in. Then use Mac The Ripper to decode it. Then use Handbrake to re-code it to iTunes friendly format. Then throw the new file you made into your itunes library and sync with your devices. Then stow away the DVD in storage.
You will have that Dr. Who on your computer (iTunes, Front Row), and on all your iDevices.

Sometimes I think they don't want to sell macs. No DVD, low resolution on the macbook pro 13", only 64GB on the cheapest macbook air, and what with their promise for supporting games? What will Valve think of the Intel graphics? They can buy and do ANYTHING now with their amount of cash. They can have so much more marketshare if they would just release a new macbook with a good graphics card, dvd, and a nice price. What is possible with the tablets, should be possible with the macbook. Windows marketshare would drop in a second.
You really do not know Apple if you think they care about having big chunks of marketshare by selling Mac's with lower profit margins. I'm pretty sure Apple is doing fine with the strategy they have in place now.
Question about the new Display. The Thunderbolt port will control audio, screen brightness, etc, without the need for the USB cable?

Well, that is partly the case. 1/3 of their market is the iPhone and iPad. Laptops and desktops will vanish from the market. Just like desktops. They use to be in, everyone had one. Then when the laptop came out, everyone switched over and desktops became not popular. They are so cheap now because they are vanishing from the market. Now tablets, idevices, and mobile phones are the new market. They will make the laptop vanish. They are like the computer, phone, everything in your pocket. In a few years, Laptops will be "out". Its all going to be tablets and mobile smart phones.
They have an external Super Drive option in the online store for $79. It is an external drive though and probably won't match the mini visually (who knows) and I am sure cheaper options from OWC and others will show up very soon. It sure won't stop me from upgrading my home entertainment system...
Yeah it's the same one as the drive available for the Air. Fine in a pinch, not good as a permanent fixture like in a media center. Ah well. If only Netflix streaming content didn't suck then I wouldn't need a DVD drive at all
In my opinion, it may be a bit soon to loose the opitcal drive on the mini. I still use my super drive alot on my Mac. However, the trade off appears to be the price point.
I personally don't see the Macbook Air taking taking place of the old Macbook.

How about a bring your own thumb drive--go into the Apple store, pay $30, and leave with it on a thumb drive?
Of course, this may be because the $69 thumb drive is effectively the family pack.

Who's stopping you to do that? Just get an external DVD burner if that's so important for you and you need a MBA or Mac Mini.
Ehm, think about the environmental impact that really has. All the plastic that is used to create the case and the DVD, it's just a waste of resources. Seriosly, are you willing to pollute the planet more than necessary just because it "feels nicer"?
When you don't have internet for what? Reinstalling OS X Lion? If you've got a brain you can always follow a guide and make a partion with Lion and install from that... One can also ask himself why it's so necessary to reinstall OS X when you've got no internet, if you need to use OS X and install from a CD just install SL then? Also there are plenty of hotspots unless you live in the middle of a forest.
No one is forcing you to buy it. You praised Windows 8 which will be waay more expensive than Lion, that's a stupid price. I think the price for Lion is fair.
So are you reinstalling your computer once a week here or what's the big deal? Well you're right that it's really necessary with Windows since you have to reinstall it once a week if you want a fast system since everything slows down after about one week, although that's not the case with OS X so I don't see the importance of it. And as I said you can always make a recovery partition.
