Fake (Converted) white iPhone 4 ???

Hi guys, I'm new here and I have question about the white iPhone 4. I'm trying to buy a locked white iPhone 4 on craigslist. The seller gave me the serial number of the phone: 88020xxxDZZ.

I checked it with Apple website and it said the warranty is expired. I don't think it's the original white since the white one just came out couple months ago. Anyone know what's DZZ mean? I read somewhere that A4S = 16G black. A4T = 32Gb black.
 
Serial number reads 2010, week 20. That was before the iPhone 4 even launched, therefore it is an early production model, and therefore originally a black iPhone 4.
 
Anyone has the original white iPhone 4? Could you please post up the serial number and model so I can know what to look for in a real white iphone 4. Thanks

Thanks for the info. Is it like a beta version of the phone or something? the DZZ part seems to be very strange compare to the normal ones.

No its just the serial number.. Mine is 2010 week 22, also before iPhone 4 launch date.
 
Ask for the model number. Doesn't the white iPhone have a unique model number??

Also pics of the front should tell you (proximity sensor). Not even sure Apple would support a modified phone. I wouldn't buy it. Sounds like trouble.

The serial number indicates that it's an older model. Definitely converted. In the picture I have attached, you will see that the one with the dotted proximity sensor is the converted model, and the one with the black bar proximity sensor is the official model. This used to be a surefire way to tell the difference but now conversion kits are being made with the new style sensor.

As long as you're not paying a premium for the device because of its color, I don't see a reason not to buy it. Just test it out and make sure that prox sensor, earpiece, headphone, dock, speakers, etc work and you should be good.

I certainly wouldn't purchase a converted iPhone 4 with the dotted proximity sensor though. They're trouble.
 
I switched from the black iPhone 4 to the white iPhone 4 earlier in June, and I still have the serial numbers copied down. A4S definitely means black, and DZZ means white. To break your serial number down. 88 (the machine used to build the iPhone), 0 (built in 2010), XXX(Nothing bad intended :), but this is an identifier specific to your iPhone), DZZ (a white iPhone). But I do think it's a bit weird that the phone has a zero in it when the white iPhone was released in April 2011. But the DZZ does indicate a white iPhone 4.

I'm not sure, but when in doubt, I'd skip it. It's always better to be safe than to sorry when it comes to things in this.
 
Thanks for all of the replies. Is it possible that the phone is a replacement? and Apple gave him the old one, the one that manufactured in last year. Like iphone3DG3 mentioned, the phone has 0 as 3rd character in its serial number is made in 2010 and the warranty is expired. But it has DZZ as the last 3 char which indicated that it's white 16Gb iphone 4.....

It's very unlikely. I've gotten multiple swaps for iPhones before, including a warranty swap for my previous black iPhone 4. All iPhones (unless new) that come from the Genius Bar have a serial number that starts with "5K." In this case, it would most likely not be a replacement, as the serial number does not start with "5K."
 
My white iPhone also ends in DZZ. What's fishy is that the warranty is expired. How could that be? I could be wrong, but can't you tell by looking inside the dock connector/headphone jack or plug it up into iTunes?

Bring a laptop with you to the sale. If the phone shows up as black in iTunes, you'll know. :p
