Sorry to say that, but miknos I don't think your problem is the same than our.
We are talking about the computer going black randomly (fans always on) and no other way than hard reboot, followed by a kernel panic.

Alright guys, I've done the clean install, without Wi-Fi. I'm plugged in with ethernet and I never crashed. I will try to enable Wi-Fi to see if I crash now.

Edit : I crashed 2 times with Wi-Fi within 30 minutes :) I think that the problem is more likely to produce with the Mac App Store because it is checking internet every time. Now I'm going to try ethernet a few hours again.
I'll try to connect to another Wi-Fi network too, because the one I'm using is opened with no SSID broadcasting. Maybe that's the reason. I'll try this after ethernet.

Interesting stuff, keep us updated.

Interesting stuff, keep us updated.

Disregard my first message. The repair mysteriously stopped the issue for a week or so but then it returned just as bad as ever.

This ONLY started to happen once I upgraded to Lion. Never happened in Snow Leopard and if I boot into my Windows 7 partition, it's fine.

This bug is killing me...I've been through every OSX beta/gm release over the past 10 years and I've never encountered anything this bad this close to release. Arrrgghhh!

Exactly the same issue on a mid-2010 15" MBP. Same stack trace as the original poster.

Seems it's NVIDA related. Can be reproduced by selecting the App Store directly after booting up. Other things cause it to happen also, but always involves clicking something. Doesn't crash on normal cpu usage etc.

Verify disk returns no errors. I've also tried a clean install of GM and the same problem persists. Have sent numerous stack traces to Apple which all indicate an NVIDA issues. Temperature of all components pretty low and within normal limits.

Very annoying. Completely unusable. Am scared to do anything for fear of a lock-up.

I hope they release a patch for us mid-2012 users.

I have latest firmware and updates.

I suspect they will get the GM out for new macs and then patch up the software for older macs. I don't recommend the GM for mid-2010 MBP users out there.

Update:

using gfxCardStatus to run in integrated gfx mode only. No crashes so far. This will prove it's nVIDA related or not.

Looking good so far :)

Thanks for the update. For the record I have the same gpu and same rom revision/gMux version. Using gfxCardStatus to stay with integrated too and haven't had any crashes (yet).

I have been having this same problem with my mid-2010 MBP since December 2010 on and off. It actually went away for a while (a couple of months) prior to my upgrading to Lion today. I had switched it to not automatically adjust the brightness and the problem went away for a while. However, since upgrading to Lion today, I have experienced about 6 of these crashes (I can't call them anything else) and a host of other weird anomalies. I have taken my MBP to the Genius Bar and even left it there overnight and they have had nothing useful to say about it, except to reinstall the system after erasing the drive. It seems that now the screen will not only go black randomly, but it will also refuse to wake from sleep if left longer than a half an hour. My warranty is unfortunately expired and I will bet you dollars to doughnuts that the Geniuses will be more interested in swapping out a motherboard or a video card now that I will be paying for the repairs. Unless this is a Lion issue, I feel like I have no choice but to do that. But if anyone manages to get this issue resolved, please post to let us know. Thanks.

Amazed they even looked at it given it's still officially a beta.

Should point out that this occurred on a Preview 4 upgrade and full clean install of the GM.

Apple need to address this asap.

PS Don't worry about 12 month warranties. An expensive MBP isn't really fit for purose if it stops working even after a year! I'd say a laptop should work for at least 5 years. And in the EU you're entitled to a warranty for a reasonable period of time. A $2,000 laptop should last longer than a year!

I've tried everything I can get in many threads, including reinstall OS, reset PRAM (or something similar). None has worked until this.
Yes, gfxCardStatus helps. Using only integrated card will do it for now. But we need NVIDIA supports because, well I need photoshop sometimes

10.7.2

Has anyone tried the 10.7.2 update to see if it fixes the problem yet? I am getting by with gfxCardStatus running in integrated mode, but this is getting really old...I can't use my external Cinema Display in integrated mode.

I've been plagued by this same issue starting from 10.6.6 trough to 10.7 Initially external monitor and using spotlight was a trigger for the screen to cut off. Than pretty much any random app or action would trigger it. With the 10.7 being worst affected. Multiple crashes in a row, any random combination of things.

Had my mid- 2010 MBP at repair shop for 3 days, and returned to me without any solution. Officially they could not support 10.7 as at the time 10.7 was not released to public, so they would not support or troubleshoot on it. Had to restore 10.6.8 to my secondary internal drive on which they where unable to replicate kernel panic, but they blamed my SSD[custom install not supported by apple] drive as possible suspect. All other hardware and software was given ok by tehem.

However I can see now from this thread that this is a common issue that needs serious attention from apple.

Are you sure it's the same problem? Do you have a stack trace? I have ONLY ever seen this in 10.7, unless it's exploiting a hardware fault that's been there for a while.

Lion Blackscreen

Installed Lion yesterday morning... almost immediately started getting random Blackscreen crashes. Mostly when clicking on a link or email or file... but really no repeating event to point to.

2010 MBP I7 w/ 8gb RAM

I keep seeing references to "10.7.2" but I'm guessing that's available to developers only right now.

Installed gFXCardStatus to see if that'll work... but I'm a designer so I really CAN'T be without the discrete video card... or my Mac.

Looking for suggestions, ideas, condolences, or camaraderie....

MBP Late 2008 2.53 / 8 GB upgrade - Lion Upgrade

It crashed every single time I booted into it some times it is at the login screen with BSD process on SystemUIServer and sometimes it is Kernel_task. This is really frustrating just like Windows Vista.

Update

Since I installed gfxCardStatus and set the card for "Discrete Only", Lion hasn't crashed. Based on this one bit of evidence, it seems to me that it has a problem with the "Dynamic" card selection.

Others might want to try this and see if it works for them.

Not sure if anyone cares anymore, but Paragon was causing my Lion install to crash on login. I had to go into Single User Mode and disable the driver to get it to work. Uninstalled it and having no more problems. Just going to wait of OSXFUSE and (hopefully) an update to NTFS-3G.

This looks as the same issue to me, perhaps i'm missing something. They have given all the hardware ok at the repair center you think they are covering some larger fault?

I'm too having this black screen issue after installing Lion - no random crashing just leaving the machine suspended and returning and not able to use it.

My install was an upgrade over Snow Leopard 10.6.8. MacBook Pro 15" 2010
Using GFX card status as dynamic. Will try and troubleshoot more.
