I crippled my late-2009 17" MBP after installing Windows 7, NTFS-3g and Macdrive. I'm not sure what the culprit was, but now the Mac is having issues and trying to repair the disk with the system software CD finds a "keys out of order" error that is not repairable. So I'll be reformatting the disk and restoring it from an recent Time Machine back up.

Since I'm going to be essentially starting over, I thought this would be a good time to upgrade from the original 500GB/7400rpm hard drive to a 1TB drive but I see the latter only exists in 5400rpm at the fastest. My research has come up with contradictory statements. Will 5400rpm be noticeably slower? If so, should I get a 750GB/7400rpm drive instead? Will the 5400rpm drive use less battery power? My original drive is pretty battery-efficient at 7400rpm. Can anyone recommend a model of hard drive? At Newegg, my only 1TB choices are the Western Digital Scorpio Blue (5200rpm) or the Samsung Spinpoint M8 (5400rpm). And lastly, does the cache matter much (8MB vs. 16MB)? The 1TB drives only come in 8MB. I'm clearly no expert in hard drives so any help is appreciated.

i have been looking at the same drive selection for a few days trying to decide what to use in my optibay setup

in your situation, on a system drive, i think it would be worth it to go 7200/750 with 16mb cache. the extra speed and cache should be beneficial.

in my situation i'm wondering if i'll see any difference as a secondary drive (music and photos)
i'm leaning towards the 1 TB, if one of these things would go on sale it'd ease my decision. hate paying $110 for the samsung when i know it was $90 when it came out.

People say that because the memory is denser on the platters of a 1TB drive, more data is read with each pass, so it sorta makes up for them only being 5400rpm. How true that is in the real world, I don't know.

Also, drives are 7200rpm, not 7400rpm. Just FYI.

nice to hear your vertex is arriving today.
i have a samsung 470 on order that should be in the ups truck as we write.

also nice to note you elude to my being cheap. i overpaid on the 470. pissing away money isn't among my pass times. (i much prefer pissing away time on internet forums)

Not cheap, just that when the price difference is 1-2% of the cost of your laptop it seems inconsequential.

Vertex is on the truck for delivery as of 6:24AM, waiting for the SMS that it's here...I have no idea where my #00 screwdriver is, going to have to run out quick to get another.

well we both know i'm probably ordering the thing anyway, just the principle of it.

i'd just like to hear from someone if a 7200 rpm/16 mb cache drive is going to have a noteable impact on the speed cover flow in itunes or photo libraries populate.

Still tough to decide although I'm leaning towards the 750GB. Doing a little more research at OWC and storagereviews.com does recommend the 1TB/5400rpm drives as secondary drives. Still hate to miss out on the extra 250GB of space given the cost difference is only about $50. But since I do 3d modeling and rendering for the most part, it's probably best if I prioritize speed.

From what I read, the Western Digital black can reduce your battery life, so maybe pick an other 750 gb 7200 rpm drive.

Maybe the Seagate 750 gb version is ok. It uses less power, yet it posts similar speed and similar latency ( 12 ms or something ).

Thanks for all the input. I ordered the Hitachi Travelstar 7k750 (with enclosure case so it could have a second life as an external hard drive). I figured the 7200rpm was more important than the 1TB drive that could be slower. I opted for the Hitachi because its specs state it uses less power than the Seagate. However, the WD Scorpio Black power usage is pretty good according to the spec. It's tough to say if the stories about WD are just anecdotal or based on certain usage patterns. Thanks again.

In the latest version of La Cie call "Rugged USB 3. / FireWire 800",
you have an interesting choice.

500 Go (5400rpm)
500 Go (7200rpm)
1 To (5400rpm)

http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10553

Myself, I will take that La Cie with 500GB with 7200rpm

I prefer, for my need, 500 vs 1To because when you are almost full of info on 1To, and the HD have problems without no recuparation possible, your lost will be HUGE. So, when I'll have my 500GB full, I will buy another one. It is a small price to pay to buy a new one.

^ Which brand(s)? Also, what about the battery life issue mentioned here:

...

And the vibrations I've seen mentioned elsewhere?

I upgraded the storage in my MacBook Pro to a 500 GB Western Digital Scorpio Black (7200-rpm) and haven't noticed much of a change in my battery life, and I can confirm (at least for my computer) that there's no vibration or noise.

Wherever the army needs me.
Im interested in hearing about peoples hands on experiences regarding the speed difference.

My previous 15" MBP (2010) had absolutely no noticeable speed differences between my 500GB WD Caviar Black (7200), and the 1TB WD Caviar Blue (5400) I tossed in later on, EXCEPT with benchmarks, or loading large programs or games. Average tasks meant almost nothing. The battery difference was also negligible between them, MAYBE 10 minutes difference, if that much.
