The 4S has a small hole in the top edge next to the headphone jack. The hole is about the same size and position as the SIM-eject hole on the 3GS, but on the 4S the SIM tray is in the side, so it's not that.

Anyone know what it's for? Was it on the ip4 too?

It's a microphone. I believe it's primarily used with the main mic for noise cancelling.

JI imagine it could also be used in conjunction with the bottom speaker when in speaker-phone mode. If so, it would be easy it to test - simply cover one or the other speaker and see which one works.

On the other hand, it could continue to function in its noise cancelling function while in speaker-phone mode.
