RAM upgrade for 2011 MBP

Hi,

I want to upgrade from 2x2gb to 2x4gb ram in my 2.3Ghz 13'' 2011 Macbook pro. I've read something about 1333 being wrong but the reccomended spec for the ram, using the website checker is as follows
  • DDR3 PC3-10600
  • CL=9
  • Unbuffered
  • NON-ECC
  • DDR3-1333
  • 1.5V
  • 512Meg x 64

Is this wrong then? Im guessing it's the DDR3-1333 people are talking about, however I can't seem to find the speed people suggest (1066?).

I'm using mrmemory.co.uk and crucial.com/uk.

Any advice would be really apreciated. Thanks :)

Almost forgot. I also want to upgrade my Imac, which is a 27'' 3.2ghz mid 2010 from 2x2gb by adding 2x4gb making it 12gb. is this ok to do? If so are the following reccomended (by Crucual.com) ok?

DDR3 PC3-10600
CL=9
Unbuffered
NON-ECC
DDR3-1333
1.35V
256Meg x 64

edit AGAIN,

Just checked and apple ship the macbook pros with ddr3-1333, have I got the complete wrong end of the stick?

I think you may be getting the different naming schemes confused. DDR3 is classified by two different naming schemes:

For 1333 MHz memory, which is used in 2011 MacBook Pro computers:
  • PC3-10600
  • DDR3 1333 MHz
For 1066 MHz memory, which is used in Late 2008 - Mid 2010 MacBook Pro computers:
  • PC3-8500
  • DDR3 1066 MHz
The RAM upgrade compatibility check on Crucial's website is pretty accurate in recommending memory for Apple Macintosh computers so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

The memory that your iMac uses is also 1333 MHz, which is stated within this Apple Support Document.

(Just FYI: I have a pair of 4 GB Crucial DDR3 1066 MHz modules in my 2010 MacBook Pro and they work great, and would recommend purchasing either Crucial or Kingston as they are two of the best memory manufacturers on the market.)

I've been reading about people having problems with the crucial 8gb kit for the mbp, does anyone know if this has been sorted, or am I just worrying, as obviously some people will have problems and post on forums.

just found the offending forum thread which put doubt in my mind, but just noticed its from 2010, like you say.

Which thread are you referring to?

If I remember correctly, there were issues with users trying to upgrade their 2010 13-inch MacBook Pros using 1333 MHz memory due to the computer attempting to run the memory at its full speed (although the computer only officially supported 1066 MHz DDR3).

You really have nothing to worry about -- the upgrade process is very simple, and in a worst case scenario if the memory that you purchase doesn't work correctly you can always return it for replacement or a refund (depending on the place that you order it from) and try a different brand.
