I downloaded Open Office in the interim while I decided between Office 2011 for Mac vs Office on Windows in a virtual machine, since I need to work with the Office Suite for work.

8 months later I have not had to use anything but Open Office. I never ran into any compatibility issues at all. (I use the word processor and the spreadsheet apps and save all documents in .doc and .xls formats).

OpenOffice for sure.

Google Docs.
It seems I'm always on a different machine and nothing compares to Google Docs for accessibility.

I went from having Office for Word and Excel (not an Outlook fan) to buying Pages ($15) and using Google Docs for a spreadsheet app.

If I were going all free I wouldn't bother with OpenOffice/NeoOffice/LibreOffice as Google Docs is very good. The only exception would be if you're a true word processing power user or need the extra layout and formatting features that a native app provides.

OpenOffice.org is not to be recommended any more. It has been halted for too long. The LibreOffice (an OpenOffice.org fork) has overtaken OpenOffice.org for some time now and it shows. It runs much better and has fixed all the annoying bugs and added features that Sun/Oracle blocked for so long. NeoOffice is an ok competitor because it ties in with OS X much much more than LibreOffice and OpenOffice.org do. However, I find both OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice to work much more stable and faster.

+1 for LibreOffice. I tried out the new M$ Office and promptly ditched it. AbiWord, NeoOffice and Open Office are good also.

Libreoffice replaced OpenOffice awhile back. But I also use google docs, mostly for spreadsheets. Honestly though, I probably use TextEdit more than the others for word processing.
