I don't think you'd notice much difference between using the LED and not. The duty cycle is very low when the LED flashes (the LED is only on for a very short period of time). For all except an alarm, timer, or call, it only flashes a couple of times. So even if you did get a constant stream of notifications, I doubt the hit on battery life would be significant.
