Bought off the dealer lot in '78 as a demo and sold drivable in 2010. I had it rebuilt in '91.

I think they went through a rough patch there... I tried a (new) C-klasse around 2002 or 2003 at a dealer and the shift knob pulled out of the console in my hand. I've always had a soft spot for the SLK series, though. It's too bad they're (used ones anyways) never found with a manual transmission here.
Manual transmission is rare here too - it took me six weeks to find the car I wanted (silver or black exterior, plain black leather interior, manual transmission).

Had a couple of issues in four years: failed O2 sensor and exhaust manifold leak. The O2 sensor was a bit pricey, but other than that the running costs have been very reasonable for the type of car it is.

1998 GMC Sonoma. It was my first vehicle. I had it for 2 years, it topped 200,000 miles, and I never had a problem. The only thing I ever had to do was replace the brakes/tires and a battery. I really wish I still had it because now I have this stupid Audi which has problems like every 4 months. I am about to get rid of it and get another small truck or small hatchback.

It looked like this for the most part.

My current car is my favorite.

'07 BMW M Roadster. Drives like a dream. Terrific short-throw 6 speed, 4 caliper vented discs, grippy, deeply bolstered 12 way adjustable seats, handles likes it's on rails.

Also has great stuff - bluetooth, gps nav systems (absolute necessity for me - I can get lost between my living room and the kitchen), nifty radio, quick drop top.

Sunny day, drop the top, turn on the radar detector, crank up some real rock, and have a ball!! :D

I must say, I drooled on my keyboard over that Cobra. I'm soooo jealous!:p

I haven't owned many cars nor very high end ones, but i have to say the best so far was the 1979 Alfetta Sedan 1.8L DOHC and Twin Carbs, that thing guzzled gas, best it ever did was 15mpg and that's a 1750cc engine :p, but it had 50/50 weight balance, RWD, great suspension, the front didn't have springs but torsion bars, and the back had a de dion tube, the rear wheels were like 4 years old when i had to let it go and they still looked like new.

The 1993 325is (E36) is a close second though :)

I'd say the best car I've owned so far is my 1999 Pontiac Firebird. It's got custom wheels and a Flowmaster Muffler. In nice weather with the T-tops off it's a fun car to cruise around in.

Well, I'm 18, so my first car is the only car I've ever had in my name which was a new 09 Infiniti G37S (got it 2 years ago). Amazing car for the money and super fun to drive. But I test drove the 2012 BMW 335iS today and was amazed. This will probably be my next car coming early 2012. About 10 grand more than the G pricing in at about $54,000 when loaded with what I want, but the car is truly luxurious with a sports car feel right under the M3.

I've also driven my dad's new Mercedes SL550. Amazing car; sexy and luxurious, but it's slow for the $100,000+ price tag (obviously not a slow car, but not sports car fast by any means) and I feel like an old man when I drive the car.

We have a '98 SLK 230 and it is indeed a good little car. We've had it 8 years, pretty much trouble free except for a couple hydraulic issues with the roof. My only real complaint is the interior is fragile. Not quite what I expect from Mercedes.

love the slk, had a designo copper orange wish I'd never had given her up.

my current 370z is my best vehicle to date though.

A 1976 Chrysler Gallant auto 1.6L sedan. I paid $1500 for it with 50,000 miles on it from the sensible lady original owner in the early 80's. It was cheap because it was highly unfashionable and hard to sell as an auto. It was utterly reliable cheap to run, surprisingly fun to drive and invisible to cops. I gave it to a brother after I had finished with it,.It floated around for the decade or so racking up about 250,000 miles with minimal maintenance.

My actual favourite was a 20 year 1974 manual Honda Civic. It was old and a struggle to keep on the road but I loved that car. It had the appeal of a finely built toy (that was falling apart).

Not mine, but I had one of these. Had to sell it because I couldn't afford it anymore, but it's the nicest vehicle I've ever owned. Rode like a limo, had a pair of balls on road, and was nice and tall for us tall people. I never hit my head getting in or out and never had to slouch down to get in or climb out to get out.

First new car in high school, a 1974 VW Beetle. I currently have a restored 1966 Beetle, and a Limited Production 2003 New Beetle Turbo S. The wife drives a 2011 VW Tiguan. Yes we are a all VW family.

Very Nice!

My first car was a 1971 Beetle which I bought brand new for $1999.00. Times sure have changed!

Those were great cars. The thing that strikes me seeing this picture is how small it is. My first thought was "that's a 5 series? It's tiny!". That car is smaller than the current 3 series, and maybe the 1 series. It's sad to me how big and heavy modern cars are compared to older versions.

Personally, I'm just waiting on the two lane-wide gleaming alloy air cars.
