All iPads Wireless router + External HDD to iPad 2

Hello,

If a wireless router has a USB port, and if I connect a external hard drive to it, will I be able to access movies and pictures stored in my hard drive, on my iPad 2?

It's a netgear router :

If so, where will they show up in My iPad? Is there an app for that or ??

Or can anyone suggest a better setup? (P.S I can't afford time capsule)

Yes, you can use either the FileBrowser app to access the hard drive via SMB sharing protocol or the FilesConnect app to access it via the Apple AFP protocol. Both apps will give you Finder-style access to the drive from your iPad.

It's great to use a USB hard drive on a router like the Airport for this purpose, you can avoid leaving a computer on all the time to serve files to the iPad, and you don't need iTunes to transfer media wirelessly.

FileBrowser is cheaper than FilesConnect and has a better interface, but FilesConnect is more powerful and can access Dropbox, Facebook, etc. as well.

I've another question..it may sound stupid...

To access my photos and movies from HDD will I need an internet connection also? Or it would work, if I just turn on the wifi router and connect the hard drive ?

You should be able to use Ad-Hoc for that.

You won't need an internet connection, but you will need the local IP address of the router for FileBrowser, which you can get from a router utility like Airport Utility for Mac (if you have an Airport router, for example).

FilesConnect is so good at detecting wireless shares that you won't even need to give it this address.

Files Connect HELP!!!!!

I purchased Files Connect and have no idea how to connect to the hard drive that is connected to my wireless router via USB.

My device is iPad Mini.

If anyone would be kind and patient enough to explain this to me, that would be great.
