Strange lock icon at upper right?

that would be the portrait lock orientation icon.
if you double press the home button and swipe over to the left side with the iPod controls there is an icon you can press to turn it off

I'm sure most people that own iPhones don't even know you can double tap the home button for quick app switching
its been around for awhile. you can also swipe one more time over and there is a volume control
