32Gb or 64Gb? Do you ever get close to 64Gb?

It really depends on how you envision using it. I have a 32GB that works very comfortably for me most of the time. Vacations are where extra space comes in handy (taking along extra movies for long flights or car rides and having some headroom for transferring photos from SD cards). I get around this because my wife also has a 32GB iPad, so we can coordinate content. If she didn't have one also I would have probably purchased the 64GB.

I have a 64GB....It's about two thirds full. Just my music library would have killed a 16....If the 3 is upgraded storage wise to 128, I'd go for it....Might not fill it, but there's nothing worse than worrying about how much space you have left.

As posted, it just depends on what you plan on using your iPad for...I have friends who are perfectly happy with the 16GB model.

Based on your planned usage of the iPad, I don't think you'll need the 64GB version unless you are planning on storing a library of notes in the device.

I have the 64GB version, but I use it to consume media and fully load it with movies and digital comics so I have plenty of media with me when I need it.

I would say that if you have no plans to load up the device with movies or other files just to have them with you when/if you need them, get the smallest, most affordable iPad that meets your needs.

I have a 64 Gb model...I originally envisioned and loaded a large chunk of my music library to it (~30Gb)...I thought I'd listen to it more then I actually ended up doing...I don't have a single song on it now...so, yes under normal conditions, i have a lot of unused space...however, like poloponies points out, vacations/trips are where the extra space comes in handy...even thought, I am not sure 32Gb wouldn't be enough on those occasions....

OP, from what you stated usage plans, I would think a 32Gb will be more than enough for you...

I was thinking about what would be the best iPad to become a kinda computer: some device I wouldn't need to tether to another computer for files.

It's all in the video.

Music takes little room for a myriad of songs and pieces I enjoy listening to. 8GB music is a lot, though I have over 200GB on a hard drive.

Documents swallow nothing, even when there are plenty on the device. iBooks and PDFs aren't so big unless you have a huge library you need to access all the time.

Photos can take space, but never so much space.

So the movies will hog everything, taking GBs like mad. If you want a good amount of video to be on the iPad so you don't need to hook to a computer every couple days, you need the largest available.

If you find yourself loving video, wait for a 128GB model. I think I won't be well-pleased with an iPad until it reached the 500GB storage area. Might be around 2016 when those hit the market. By that point the iPad will be an all-round computer for 95% of the populace.

16GB is fine for me

I use iTunes Match so music storage isn't an issue.

And I rarely play games, so large Apps aren't much of a concern.

I have the 32gb and never thought I would use it up as I don't store music on it.

Once I started downloading my magazine print subscriptions though, the thing started filling up fast, think I only have about 4gb left right now. Once you read the mag, you can archive it and it open up space as well. FYI-this IS the way to read mag's!!

Also EA had a special a little while back and I downloaded a bunce of games that some were over 1gb and that also help fill it up.

I guess were I'm going with this, when the 3 comes out I will be getting the largest memory they offer as I want it to last 2 years as this one will be soon, to really get my money's worth out of it.

Also the longer I have one the more I'm doing with it and finding out that more memory is only a good thing.

Everything is only getting bigger and faster.

First off, 64gb has actual capacity of only 58gb (iOS takes up rest).

And I am routinely full up to 56gb or so. I travel extensively and the iPad is my portable DVR, so I've always got at least 20-30gb of video content on it. Then books, lots of apps and lots of documents (mostly PDFs of blueprints) and its easy to hit the max storage.

I don't keep any music on it. All music goes onto my iPhone. iPad = Video and utlity apps and iPhone = Music and Games.

i've got the 32gb version and find that w/everyday use, i only have ~2GB free. about 60% of that is for video, 18% for comics and ebooks/pdf, and the rest is magazines. no music on the ipad, all kept on my ipod.

this will be the first year that i take it with me on my annual ski trip since i got my ipad in May and boy do i wish i had the 64gb version. 32gb isn't even close to what i need and cloud storage is so overrated.

i have the wifi-only version and the inn that i'm staying in only has 56K, so even if i delete each movie after i watch them, i don't have an effective way of loading more content to it. i'll be taking a laptop with me on the trip, but it's not the machine which i sync with using itunes and itunes is not multi-machine friendly anyway.

my next ipad will be at least 64gb.

16 is well enough for me. I don't use mine to hold media though as I have my iphone and macbook for that. I use my ipad more for the occassional game, ebooks, browsing, and streaming abilities than a storage device

When is Apple going to add a micro-sd slot? Would make life easier for all.

64GB for me whic has no videos or music on it yet is 15GB shy of being full. Not sure what takes up that space but I use it for my Uni course, so imagine its all the PDFs, Powerpoints and other related documents I have.

Knew when I bought it I had to get the biggest. Glad I did.

Oh, an after thought. I do have All of Wiki on it as well, so guess that takes up a few GB

I have a 64gig. It's fine but I would love 128gigs, 256gigs, would kill for a terabyte. All my media is digital, and while I don't even come close to needing access to all my media, I would still like that option, but that's me. Reading these forums have been like therapy for me. Helping me realize how to make do with the limited space. I was actually surprised that the iPad maxed out at 64gigs when it was introduced. I was sure Apple would have had a 128gig option. Maybe when the 3 comes out.

32gb is fine, but for me, it's the 64gb so i can put the whole of my music library into it, and it's a pleasure to put HD porns in it

so to make it easy, if your whole music library is less than 32gb, then buy the 64gb and put it all there. but if your music library is larger than 32gb, then buy the 32gb and choose playlist to put only important music into it.

if i were u i'd get the highest possible than saving a hundred bucks and regretting it later.

I've got 6 gig available on my 64 gig device. I travel quite a bit and I load up movies & music for the plane trips.

The most I've used on my 32g is 8g. I typically use mine for some of my music, apps, and internet browsing. I could easily get by with a 16g iPad. I don't see any point of putting everything I own onto it since I have an iPod touch and MBP already. My iPad was purchased mainly for portability.

Well put it this way. We got a 64gb iPad for my wife to take to a big trade show and between photographs, keynote presentations, and videos, we passed the 32gb boundary the first night we had it. We were set to buy a 32gb and when we got to the store we looked at it and each other (we're both computer types) and silently said $100 more for twice the storage? Go for it.

Need more space

I love both of my iPads. I work away from home for weeks on end and the iPad one and two served me very well over the years. If you have a lot of music and can't bear to not have all of it all the time the time, or a lot of movies, or a lot of... You get the point.

Do you want to have to manage your iPad's memory or just load it up and go? I prefer the latter. I never know when the mood might strike to hear that Beatles Rarity, or that live Zeppelin track from 197???.

Life is short, don't be limited by too little storage.

I had 16 GB.. and it was not enough for me.. had a few apps and some movies and bam, suddenly only 1 GB left.. next iPad i'm going to get is surely going to be 64GB.. i HATE not having enough space and have to delete something.

I get to full or nearly so all the time, though given how I use my iPad (see my signature...) this is not much of a surprise, and in fact I'd take a 128GB ipad3 in a heartbeat if available. I fact I'd take more even a TB as a poster above notes. I'd love not to have to choose which among my media I store locally. Streaming from the cloud or downloading from Dropbox isn't always possible or feasible depending on the app and file size. If I could carry my entire collection of everything with me, all the time, I would. At least until cheap wireless broadband is ubiquitous. And I mean globally.

I have the 64 gig version, with 13.7 gig of music, 232 applications, 3,847 photos, no videos or movies.

I have 587 megabyte available... If you are going to be downloading a lot of apps and games, then I Definitly recommend the 64. Because many apps are starting to show up that are over 1gig. Some are pushing 2gig. It does not take long to use up the space when apps are becoming greater and greater in file size.

If you can afford it and feel that you'll use the space, go for it. I've crossed the half-full mark (own a 64) in 5 months of ownership.

32GB will be fine if you are just going to load up apps and pictures, but once you start adding videos or large amounts of music, 64GB will come in handy.
