Good idea. I'd really like having a large collection of retina wallpapers ready for when the iPad 3 is released (since we pretty much know it'll be retina). Unfortunately I don't have anything to contribute right now, when when I do I'll be back.

Yeah, I'm going to look some more tomorrow. Most of the wallpapers on google images are designed for resolutions less than 1920x1080. Looks like we have lots of Photoshopping ahead of us!

Tomorrow for me as well. After doing a quick google search right now it seems you're right. I didn't see a single wallpaper that was above 2000 pixels in both directions. Looks like it won't be as simple as "search and crop" for us.

As long as the resolution is te closest to the retina one, then I don't care. It will clearly be crisper in terms of resolution.

I'm about to contribute a bunch of wallpapers....

Since the file sizes are too big to put as attachments here, I'm gonna put the the download links for them. The images attached to the post are a preview of all the wallpapers I've included in the links along with the names on them so you know which download link to click. I'll update this post every time I upload some new wallpapers.

I've moved my files from Dropbox to SkyDrive, so they should download now.

Andromeda Galaxy
Beach
Bristle Grass
Ducks on a Misty Pond
Eagle & Waterfall
Elephant
Flamingos
Floating Leaves
Forest in Mist
Isles
Lake
Lion
Mt Fuji
Poppies
Pink Forest
Red Bells
Mountain Lion Galaxy
Shell on the Beach
Light From Above
Rainy Window
Calvin and Hobbes (thank you, wy2sl0, for this)
Baby Red Panda
.

I remembered that during the Lion developer preview, they found all the wallpapers were high res (3200x2000). Since I couldn't sleep, I decided to crop and resize them all to 2024x2024. This should provide a nice start to the thread. Since the file sizes are too big to put as attachments here, I'm gonna put the the download links for them. 2024 will not be enough. It's 2048 by 1536 (so you should at least have an image of 2048 by 2048).

2048 by 2048 pictures (via Google Images).

Youre right it has to be 2048x2048, but these images are not...

You, sir (or madame) are correct. Looks like at 4 in the morning my math skills for doubling resolution suck. I have gone through and fixed all the images. Thanks for the heads up on that.

The new Mountain Lion wallpaper would be nice ...

I've added it to the list of links in my original post.

This is one of my favorites that I've been using on my iPad 1. I found a version of it online at 2560x1600, then using some content aware scaling, I was able to extend the vertical resolution to 2048. Then it was simple to crop it horizontally to 2048 as well.

It is pretty crazy how much I have to scroll on my macbookair. I consider this display pretty high res, and the fact that it is 13 inches vs 10 for the ipad, means that the retina display will be mind boggling.

I know, I have a 27" monitor at 1920x1080, and the iPads display is going to exceed that.

Potentially foolish question...if the resolution of the screen is thought to be 2048 px * 1536 px, why are most of the backgrounds online 2048 by 2048 square? Just so that you can rotate the image for home/lock screen, or is it something you can tell the iPad to do and just rotate the image when the device itself rotates? o_O

Yup, you answered your own question. :) The iPad will intelligently rotate your background image based on your screen orientation. That's why the background images need to be 2048 pixels tall, and 2048 pixels wide. That way no matter how you hold your device, it has enough pixels.

Exactly.

Which I am sure is the reason Apple is not going to put the highest reolution screen of any of their devices on one of their lowest price products. Not this year, not next year.
