I'm using 10.4 and iPhoto 5.0.2. I recently found an incredibly aggrivating bug.

Whenever I make any edit (crop, smooth, etc.) and then close the window by double-clicking or hitting "done," the save changes bar pops up as usual. Immediately after it finishes, there's a slight but definitely perceptibly shift towards the red end of the spectrum, and it looks like the picture jiggles a bit before you cut back to the regular view.

If I want to make anything more than 2 edits, the picture starts to look ridiculous. People's skin is glowing red and it just generally looks awful. I suppose I could go back into the adjust menu and futz with the RBG values. But a) there's no reason I should have to do that, and b) I don't have any reference to the original, so I'm sort of shooting in the dark.

Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot; I appreciate it

It would be useful in the 'edit' function if they told you whether you'd already made changes - and showed a link to the original for comparison. I'd also like to be able to 'revert to original' without having to go back into the main menu. And, there are times where I know I don't want to go back to the original - why can't I tell iPhoto not to bother keeping it.

I haven't noticed the 'red' when it saves the image but it does jiggle and seems to become slightly more focused when you save it.

I tend to work on the principle that if there are things 'drastically' wrong in the image, I open it in Elements and work on it there. If it's minor colour amends, I keep it iPhoto.

I've noticed the same thing. I can only edit each photo once becuase if I do 2 or 3 everything looks really funky and red. It almost looks like its applying the "enhance" function each time you press done, only after a couple of times it starts to look really bad.

This problem has made editing in iPhoto virtually impossible for me. I hope apple fixes is soon. Please let me know if anyone has any idea about a fix...

Do you think that downgrading to iPhoto 5.0.1 could fix this?

I recently found a 5.0.1 disk image (when you try to download it from Apple you get 5.0.2). I'll try deleting my current installation and downgrading and see if that fixes this "red menace".

So, erm, I noticed this in iPhoto 5 also, but I upgraded iPhoto and the OS (Tiger) at the same time, so I didn't know which was responsible. This is driving me craaaazy, because now I have to use PSE even to make simple crops, for fear of the photo's levels being changed automatically after the edit. :(

BTW, on the topic of iPhoto bugginess in Tiger / iLife 05...there still seems to be this bug for me, that if I right click and edit in external editor, then iPhoto databanks the original photo and saves the output from PSE3 as a modified version (which I can undo), but if I drag the photo to the dock from iPhoto, it modifies the original.

BTW#2, I have sometimes experienced that when I close the photo in PSE3 and go back to iPhoto, the Albums part of the window is replaced by part of the new photo (and I don't think it's the part of the photo necessarily that was overlapping in the PSE3 window!), which persists moving the window around (but not resizing the window with the green ball). But again, I don't know if this is Tiger or iPhoto 5.

This is definitely a Tiger bug since it wasn't doing this in 10.3.9 even with iPhoto 5.0.2.

I've stopped my mass drive to get all my photos organised until a solution is found since it is driving me nuts that it's changing colours even when I want to do a simple crop.

j-a-x, Apple's tips recommend that you only do a single 'edit' pass on iPhoto in any case since if you make all the amends on one run, iPhoto can optimise the changes to avoid unnecessary degradation of the image by compressing it into its jpg each time.

I know that, but even so, sometimes it's nice to edit something twice if you missed something the first time, rather than reverting it back to the original...

So has anybody come up with a fix yet?

Yeah, write feedback to Apple - please.

I'm wholly annoyed at iPhoto, personally, and I'm about to switch to Extensis Portfolio.

I have 4500 2MB (i.e. fairly small) aerial images on my iMac, and even after the update, and a clean install of Tiger, it takes 2-3 minutes to quit, beachballs all the time...doesn't do what it's told. It's so bad, I don't even use it in front of clients anymore. :)

That would almost certainly make it a core image bug. IPhoto in Tiger (judging by the huge performance improvement) is using core image.

What GPU are the people seeing this problem using? I wonder if it's GPU specific.

By the way, when I called apple about this problem, and talked to a "Product Specialist", she hinted that there would be an OS X update VERY soon. She didn't know whether there would be an iPhoto update though, btu that would be great.

How soon?
As for me, I got the same impression within iPhoto. But when I re-opened the file in Photoshop, the modifications seemed to have been kept! Because I didn't know, I'd do the same operation 2 or three times (WB, sharpening, etc) and it REALLY shows in photoshop then. So if you are working on the pics for your iPhoto viewing pleasure, slideshows, etc, no luck. But if, like me, your modifications are made with a book in mind, I suggest you ask iPhoto to edit the pics in another program like Photoshop (whatever version) or iView Media

It appears not - the only iPhoto problem it purports to fix is it crashing after launch.

There's no mention of ColorSync profiles which is what seems to be the problem - iPhoto is ignoring the embedded profile and saving it as Generic RGB. The wait for a fix continues...

Too bad! Thanks for the explanation, though... I guess we could all set our screens to work in G-RGB calibration! ;) :D

Hey I found a fix! Basically if you set your screen to the horrible washed out ugly looking RGB calibration, launch iPhoto, then change the calibration to the calibration ofyour chosing, iPhoto behaves correctly when editing! YAY! So as long as you open iPhoto right after a reboot, I THINK that it will keep working until the next reboot (and then you have to repeat the process). cool!

Wow, thanks for that interesting solution! I think I'll stick with doing all my editing in PSE, but still, it might be really helpful to some people. :)

Actually, my method is just a temp fix. There is still SOME image degradation, but its hardly visible unless you do like 30 edits. Before my girlfriend's face turned a bright red after 3 edits, now I can do much more than 10 without visibly noticing. You can still tell how the histogram gets distorted when saving edits though...

whew, i glad someone else is experiencing this, I'm not so crazy after all.

Damn it, my brothers, I didn't know that others were facing the same issues.

PS: So right now, should I just revert to original for every single photo I have edited recently using iPhoto 5? Is that the only solution right now? Does Automator handle this? (I'm not at my Mac right now :( )
