... unless your doing video... you really don't need one these days.

You have no idea what I need, and even though you are a complete stranger, I shall be arrogant enough to ask you to respect me in that.

I barely manage with a 2009 4-core Pro and 5870. I will pay whatever it costs (within reason) for max cores on a brand-new Pro. I need it for my work, independent of whatever some random stranger may tell me.

There are "professionals" who can do with just a Mini, there are other "professionals" who need every bit of horsepower they can get their hands on. Really, everybody should define their own needs, and leave others to define their own needs.

I just don't see the need for so much rancour on this.

Thank you. And also there are people who just want what they want because they want it and it is of no ones business but theirs. So, why do so many poster here feel the need to dictate what anyone else needs? I am so sick of hearing what other people should be good enough for whatever. If I want to buy a mac pro because it matches my refrigerator, I'm sure Apple is still very happy about the sale. Sheesh!!

I have 12 cores, and 4 cores and dual cores.. I can do anything on any one of them... so, you can't... big deal, I'm not crying over it. I just like to silence people who are FOS!

You still don't get it. It isn't about being able to do something, it is about doing it with more efficiency.

Theres no excuse for completely ignoring the Mac Pro for the last 4 years. Apple's worth is now at half a trillion dollars. Theyve got over 80 billion dollars in cash.

So what if their iToys/iOS/iPhone are bringing in cash? How does that stop Apple from still putting any kind of attention to the Mac Pro?

Actually it is every excuse. Apple are a business. They make decisions based on priorities. Their number one priority is bringing in as much cash as possible.

If that pisses off a tiny fraction of their market (and the Mac Pro unfortunately is just that now) then so be it.

Agree 100%.

Anyway, I'm currently tossing up between spending £700, buying a W3680 and a HD6870 vs selling my MP and spending £1000 on buying a 2012 Mac Pro.

Essentially it'll be £300-400 more to upgrade to a new machine..

Worth it? I think so...

So Apple, release new MP next week please. Thanks :D

Remember the days when you could buy a computer that fit your needs? Yeah. Consumer choice was always overrated. After all, why should Apple go through the effort to create a computer that could net them millions, when they can slap together a glorified iOS device, and make BILLIONS!

Apple (Jobs and Cook) actually has said that their first priority is making great products, not making money. I think their logic is that if they focus on making great products first, the money will follow.

I don't know how long Apple will be at the top with the iPad and the iPhone, but I do know that Apple has had a lot of success with their computer (desktop and laptop) segment. Their traditional computers have been selling more and more every quarter, so I don't think they want to leave that market behind. I think Apple is perfectly capable of focusing on multiple product categories. When the iPad and iPhone craze has subsided a bit, computer sales will still be there.

People who purchase Mac Pros (creative pros, people who support Macs and iOS devices with OS X Server, scientists, software developers, etc.), are very influential and probably advocate for the purchase of other Apple devices... I am certainly a huge advocate of Apple products and services because they have done a great job of support my needs as both a musician and a technology specialist for a relatively large organization with 800 to 900 iMacs, MacBooks, MacBook Pros, xServes (which will need to eventually be replaced by Mac Pros), and iOS devices. It would be foolish for Apple to alienate and neglect people like me.

Just because you might not have a need for powerful computing devices like the Mac Pro does not mean that it is a niche product for only a handful of people and deployments.

2)iMacs are really pretty powerful for much cheaper...sure, they're not the exact same performance as a $3000 MacPro but unless you really really really really need that 10-20% performance gain of a MacPro (compared to a high end iMac), it's not worth it...might as well buy 2 iMacs...or, golly, just wait the extra 2 minutes while rendering something.
.

Guess what?

A bunch of people who create the content that apple sells through their iTunes cash cow really do need the extra any% performance they can get, to make their business more efficient. Time is money, and if you can get 10% more rendering done in the same time (or whatever) the mac pro will pay for itself in short order.

There are plenty of workloads where a Mac pro will be WAY more than 10% faster in any case due to being able to work with larger data sets - the iMac is limited to only 32gb of ram, which isn't enough for many people.

Mac2012, what´s your problem? Do you hate yourself much?

Hey, did you know that even the 12-core Mac with SSDs is really a powerless computer for what some people do?

There´s always going to be the need for more power.

... I can do anything on my Nehalem MP that I can do on my wife's iMac period... there's NO DIFFERENCE for my techniques, and what I DO!

What an utter crap post! Of course there is NO DIFFERENCE in your technique whether using a Mac Pro, or puny base 11" MBA, but in MacPro I can do things much faster, more screen estate (assuming I use 27" ACD for MP) .. and all the same things done without breaking a sweat, while the MBA maybe crashed, overheated or even blown up.

Is that really hard for you to understand? I personally own a quite hi end 2011 iMac, but I feel something lack with my iMac. And I did the best thing I can do at the moment. MP is outdated, and the price never went down, so iMac was the only viable choice for me, but if only MP was updated back then, no doubt I'd ditch iMac over a MacPro.

What the hell man? You can do the same technique on Pentium III, if the software allow you to, but better hardware = less time to get the job done!

You can take my words to the bank; TB is too far behind to catch up to USB 3.0. It will become another scarce and expensive interface like Firewire.[/QUOTE]

USB is great for the average consumer's mouse, printer or external hard drive with photos. But is has horrible sustained data transfer rates and that matters to people that have high bandwidth needs. Firewire is far from dead.

TB behind? Well obviously it is because there's only a few machines that support it. I dont care if no one uses it, i plan on upgrading to thunderbolt capable machines when i can because it's infinitely better than USB.

Firewire didn't take off because only apple people really saw accessories and stuff for it. With TB, intel are pushing it to PC users in the future so it will definitely take off, especially with this tablet and ultrabook fad we have at the moment. I think it will replace HDMI outputs on mobile devices given enough time. Its a no brainer for manufactures and rumours already sugest apple are working on that.

I'll plug in a Universal Audio Apollo QUAD into a new iMac and produce a platinum album easily... not hard these days really! They are fast enough to do SERIOUS records! Now video... I think a 6 core iMac with SSD's and a TB RAID would be fine.
If you're talented, an iMac is enough really these days for music production if using a DSP processing solution.

It's what I'm using today because my PowerMac G5 tower died but honestly there are no six core iMac machines. Only quadcore with hyperthreading. If you actually had a Corei7 extreme in an iMac you'd have six cores and twelve with hyperthreading. But they have never done this - that's a thousand dollar chip.

They go for the standard quadcore with hyperthreading chip for "4/4".
