This is something I've long requested, but I noticed earlier this week that iTunes no longer downloads the SD version by default of TV shows that I've purchased. For me, this is great as I'd usually go and manually delete them to save space on my ReadyNAS; all of my devices can play the HD version without any issues.

I haven't seen this discussed anywhere else, so I'm curious to know if anyone else has noticed this. My purchases are all via season passes, just in case that seems to make a difference.

Interesting.

Can you check to see if you are still able to download the SD version of the file if you wanted to?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure you can (through the purchased section of iTunes) as I did that earlier this week before I realized the change had happened. I was surprised when I saw it this morning as well.

I'm still on the fence, though. I like the HD on my TV, but my iPad just can't hold that much HD content, meaning I like to load SD content on it. After all with that screen size, you don't notice that much difference in HD and SD... and that could also just be my eyesight.

I've now come across this issue. Have the Season Pass for The Walking Dead, and the newest episode was only downloaded in HD to my computer. I went in to my purchased section on iTunes to see if I could download it manually, but no such luck.

Downloading the SD version

You can manually download the SD version by:

1. Going to the iTunes page in the iTunes store.

attachment.php

2. Clicking on Purchased (on the right-hand side).

attachment.php

3. Choosing your episode.

4. Un-clicking Download HD When Available.

Thanks for the visual instructions. I was having some trouble downloading both sd/hd on a few occasions. It wouldn't happen to every download just the occasional random one out of many.

There is a setting on the preferences on itunes to make sure that you only download the hd version in 720 or 1080p. So for people who wants to save space on their ipads get the 720p and keep a 1080p version on a external drive.
