You can always gift apps to friends too. Wonder if this works for music as well???

I gift apps to my girlfriend a lot. Doesn't work. Gifting has to go through on your credit card even if you have app store money available.

EDIT: Beat to it.

I just bought mine...literally five minutes ago.

I paid 1199 for the 13 inch MBA ...which was 1271 after tax.
THEN...... I used the $150 gift card and purchased the extra warranty :)

----------

Also....there is a real sku for the gift card....570899 or something like that.

For the student discount on BB did you had to show your student ID or can you show the acceptance letter?

I just got mine from best buy. I was a little pissed because for a year they have all their MacBooks on sale for close to what you would get for apples Ed discount. But now all the new ones are full price. I should have waited until they go back on sale I guess.

I was about to do the same thing as you after seeing how you used the $150 for the warranty (smart!!) but I honestly believe you save more money through apple's site.. Depending on what you plan to buy that is lol

check it out (see attached pictures):

$50 dollars off through apple

$10 dollars off upgraded RAM (normally $100)

$67 dollars off the protection Plan (normally $249)

$20 dollars off a Time Capsule (normally $299)

In addition to the $100 gift card...

I would be getting the discounts on Air itself, the RAM, the protection plan, and the gift card.. Total "Savings" - $227 (includes gift card)

$227 > $150 in my case that is.. Not everyone would be getting the protection plan and RAM

For those of you that got a BestBuy price match: Did it seem like they were running some sort of official policy, or did it seem like it was up to the local store/manager to decide?

The official sku for the $150.00 education match is #5700826.

If the best buy folks don't know what they are doing.... give them that sku.

150 dollars off at BB = 175 dollars if you use BB card to buy iTunes gift cards. Not going to be buying all that other stuff myself.

Don't forget that both Apple.com and Bestbuy.com give 5% cashback if you go through ShopDiscover.com and use your Discover credit card.

I've successfully done this for each store. I went through the website, ordered for in-store pickup, and gotten the cash back.

Can you order online to get the store pickup AND the student discount?

For Apple.com I think you should be able to provided you don't mess up the cookies and directly go from shopdiscover.com's link to apple.com and then choose the Education store. Worst case, you get the Apple education discount and it doesn't cost you anything more, so why not give it a try.

As for BestBuy, if you have to get BB to pricematch Apple then it might not work to get the ShopDiscover discount. The key is it's got to be a clean online transaction patch from ShopDiscover through the store checkout using Discover.

In either event I'd screenshot each step of the process and file it away in case they bugger something up. Discover's customer service is pretty good and should take care of things if you have reasonable proof. (I bobbled the cookies on my Apple.com order and just had to fax in my Apple Order invoice to Discover, got my cashback)

Just want to make sure...

Will Best Buy match the education pricing, and give you a $150 dollar gift card? Or is it full price with the gift card? Thank in advance for the help

Full price with the 150 gift card. Then, you use that to buy 175 of iTunes gift cards.

Ok last question...

Will Best Buy let me use the 150 to help pay for the new machine? If not it looks like I'll be getting a 2011 model. One area where Best Buy offers better serivce than Apple in for a trade in. I took my old MacBook into Best Buy and not only did they give me $100 more than Apple (through PowerON) I had the option to cancel the transaction since I just brought it into the store.

I usually prefer to buy at the Apple store myself, because I feel much more optimistic about receiving good service there if I need to return or exchange. However, the deal seemed like a good one, the store was closer, and I also get the rewards points, so it works out a lot better.

Anyhow, as I understand it, the 150 is an educational promotion, so it applies to any MBA.

I'm going to find out this weekend if it works on 2011 models. The 11 inch is priced at 839...... and the wife is thinking of switching. She also found an open box for 750... would be sweet to get a $150.00 gift card on that!!!

I bought the base 11" 2012 MBA at my local Best Buy. They gave me $50 off AND a $150 BB GC. I didn't think I was going to get $50 off too. Is that what others got as well?
