It's all subjective and depends what is acceptable. Just like many here who state non-retina ready Office 2011 and CS6 look 'fine' with retina scaling (it looks horrible to me) 1080P IMHO is even worse than 1440x900 as you're not running a properly 2:1 scaled resolution. Are you playing Java games or what? Try running the game at full 2880x1800 vs 1080p, anything other than full res will look 'fuzzy' in comparison.

i'm running all sorts of games, WoW, BF3, crysis 2 etc, 1080p or 1920x1200 (to fill out the whole screen) looks just as good as my friends laptop with same specs.

i don't think theres any doubt that 2880x1800 looks better.. but thats not a resolution for a laptop gaming so thats kinda useless to discuss since it's not playable (60+ frames)

i have my real world comparisons, and for me a full HD laptop and the retina macbook pro at 1080p or 1200P is just as good.

Your previous experience won't apply here. Everything on the Retina display looks smooth and solid in all of the different scaled modes. You have to see it to fully appreciate it. The reason is that even when you choose a lower resolution display mode, your UI elements and fonts are still rendered at the high Retina resolution. Fonts and UI elements are larger at the lower resolution settings, but those elements are still rendered using 2880x1800 screen pixels.

You just have to see it to believe it - previous experience doesn't apply here.

Uh, look at my sig, I've had one since a week after launch. You must comparing it against the usually craptastic PC laptop screens, against the better IPS screens like
HP radiance, the scaled res on win7 has that scaled 'fuzzy' look.

So much of the discussion here is on the performance gains from the overclocked 650M on the rMBP. I'm receiving my 2.6GHz cMBP in a week or so and I'm still considering whether I should tinker with the overclock.

1. I'd like to know if the rMBP is less likely to overheat than the cMBP due to its redesigned cooling structure.

2. Does anyone know if the 650M on the cMBP has already been overclocked by Apple like in the rMBP?

Thanks!

Yes, it's exactly that, you read me right.

Anandtech's Review: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6023/the-nextgen-macbook-pro-with-retina-display-review

Nvidia Specifications for Nvidia GT 650M:
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gt-650m/specifications (notice the UP TO 900 MHZ)

Nvidia Specifications for Nvidia GTX 660M:
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-660m/specifications (notice the 835 MHz)

Here they discuss and confirm this very topic:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...2830-so-nvidia-gt-650m-gtx-660m-confused.html

So Apple clocked the GDDR5 version of 650M so high to actually be better than a GTX 660M.

And also Anandtech confirmed that the new thermal design actually give for the first time in a mac notebook little to no throttling at all, even after going full-burn CPU+GPU for 20+ minutes:

So for the first time we actually have a 'GTX' top-of-the-class mobile GPUs in our macs.

Kudos to Apple, that's all I can say.

Getting more and more excited for my rMBP to arrive! :D

In Win 7 you need to run it at 2880x1800 to keep everything crisp. But setting the UI to 150% keeps most things readable (though some apps aren't rendered quite right).

OSX is a different story. The scaled modes for the most part look better than other IPS displays with the same native resolution. I know 1680x1050 on my rMBP looks better than my native 1680x1050 IPS display.

Huh? Who the hell is talking about Windows 7? My god are you really this challenged? You don't run Windows 7 on the Retina MBP (where no drivers exist in the Windows world to properly support the Retina display), compare it to a Windows laptop with a regular screen, and say the Retina looks fuzzy. Is your IQ that low?

We're talking about GAMES here man, GAMES. Which all run 20-50% better in Win7 vs. OSX on my rMBP. I'm just stating, it's quite obvious when you're running a non-native res on any full screen game. Even D3 which is supposedly retina-ready does not up-scale and then down-scale like it does in OSX when running a non-native resolution. I never claimed that it looks better win Win7, I was just comparing how let's say, BF3 looks at 1080p on a 1080p windows laptop vs. BF3 running at 1080p on a rMBP. BTW, it's not a driver problem why win7 doesn't look that great on the rMBP, Nvidia's win7 and win8 drivers fully support rMBP resolution, it's just win7/win8 don't scale all that well compared to OSX. (This is also debatable as some things look better on win7 vs osx when running at full 2880 resolution)

There is a large number of rMBP owners who successfully run Windows 7 on the rMBP, and yes, the drivers properly support the 2880x1800 resolution
You can also check out the Anandtech's review, where he shows rMBO running windows.

So what's your point, again?

1) I have no over heat issues other than your standard "warmness" when playing games. I don't have performance issues either.

2) Honestly you should build yourself a gaming rig. Anandtech has stated that the difference between the rMBP and the cMBP is negligible. Probably has to do with one having an SSD and the other one doesn't.

If your laptop does overheat then yes it'll perform slower because it's throttled. Just get a laptop cooler and it'll stop throttling.

Does that justify an extra 500 dollars for a rMPB on experimental designs? No. Skip first gen tech wait for next upgrade. At least thats what I'm doing.

I just installed Windows 7 Pro x64:

Am I best off (stability/performance wise) sticking to the 296.49 Nvidia drivers that come stock with the Bootcamp Windows Support package or should I upgrade to the latest stable (unstable/beta???) Nvidia drivers?

If so, where do I get them (with the custom .inf or whatever)?

Thanks for your answer. I've wanted to build a desktop for gaming purposes for quite a while now, but I move about quite frequently and it's just not a feasible option at the moment.

Do you have a laptop cooler too? I've thought of buying them but I'm skeptical as to how effective they will work due to the MBP air vents being at the back and not at the bottom.

Cooling the bottom does help, as it conducts a lot of heat.

To those who think the RMBP has UI lag, choppiness, or otherwise can't handle it's new Retina Display, check out this video:

http://youtu.be/Dudx1GhHGiY

I recorded it this morning. You'll notice smooth scrolling of theVerge.com and Facebook - two sites that people say are problematic. All while playing three videos - two on the main screen and one full-screen 1080p on a separate desktop. Switching spaces - smooth as butter. Mission control - smooth and fluid. Scrolling - smooth as pie.

If people are having scrolling/lag issues, I suggest they troubleshoot their systems because this is clearly not a hardware issue - if it were, I would be experiencing the same thing. I am not.

That video shows the lag on the verge and Facebook. It's just a little choppy. No big deal. I've seen beast PC's show choppiness with those websites.

I guess we each have different definitions, since the scrolling of those two websites for me is perfectly normal and I can't tell the difference from any of my other Macs.

I was wondering if overclocking the Radeon HD 6770M on the 2011 MBP to similar clocks like the cMBP 2012 (GT 650M) will balance performance to par the newer card? Is there much of a difference other than clock speed?

Will it run stable? Anyone tried this on Win7?

2011 MBP: Core/Memory (675/800)
2012 cMBP: Core/Memory (810/1000)

The 650m is about 60-70% faster than the 6770m. You would need a very hefty and likely unstable overclock to reach the stock speeds of the 650m.

So there is no performance benefit to be had from installing the 304.79 Beta drivers? Or is any benefit outweighed by some instability?
http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-304.79-beta-driver.html

There's a really detailed discussion (benchmarks) on the 304.79 and a driver in the works for the 650M in this thread:

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/15369799/

And details on the 305.58 driver speculated to be coming out on the 21st:
