iPhone 5: why didn't they announce the non-contract pricing?

The majority of users are going to sign a 2-year contract anyway so which looks more appealing? "I can sell you this widget for $199*" or "I can sell you this widget for $599"
For a lot of consumers, those two prices are the difference between "Hey, I can afford this" and "Why am I even looking at this thing?"

Pricing did not change.
16GB iPhone 5 = $649
32GB = $749
64GB = $849
Color does not change price.
Wow if that's what you guys in the US get an unlocked iPhone 5 for, you are well lucky.....in UK the 16 gig version is £529.....that's about $850!!
Don't forget that US prices do NOT include sales tax, which can vary from 6-8%, and that the UK has a VAT, which closer to 20% if I'm not mistaken, and is already included in the price.
ok but even if it's 8%.....thats what.....$700 total? Still way less than over here....extra $150 to ship it over here....really?
They haven't officially announced the unlocked iPhone 5 in the US. I'd imagine it would go for what the 4S did unlocked ($450 more than the contract version). If last year is any indication, it will be available a month or so after launch date.

And it's on the whole price there, even if you get it subsidized. In NYC it's 8.875%, but only on the actual purchase price.
LOL, if you were in upper NoCal, I'd suggest you make a trip up here and get your phone. As it is, I imagine the people in Vantucky will be getting their phones from us.

No, the extra is mainly the VAT. The shipping doesn't come into play because they're all shipped from China anyhow.
20% of $649 is $129.80.
$129.80 + $649 = $778.80.
$778.80 = ~£483.
That means the premium from Apple is only ~£37.
That's $150 + tax evasion. You also will only have the manufacturer's warranty, and no statutory rights at all.
If you want to compare prices properly, take the US price, convert to UK£, add 20%. Then add a bit because you have much better statutory rights in the UK, and that cannot come for free.
Don't forget we also get two years warranty. Apple say one year but if you complain enough they have no choice but to honour the two year warranty because it's EU law.

Go to check eligibility, it gave me the unsubsidized prices on Verizon as I'm still in contract.

You don't get two years warranty. They are different things: Manufacturer's warranty (which is whatever the manufacturer offers), and statutory rights (which you get in the EU, but not in the USA, which means the _seller_ has to fix problems for roughly two years. If you buy an Epson printer at the Apple Store in London, _Apple_, and not Epson, has to fix problems for two years, because Apple is the seller. And if you buy an iPad at PCWorld, _PCWorld_, and not Apple, has to fix problems for two years, because PCWorld is the seller. )
And that's what I said: If you buy in the USA and take it to the UK, you get Apple's manufacturer's warranty, which is the same everywhere. One year. But you have no statutory rights at all, because the seller is some shop in the USA. (You would have whatever rights US law gives you against the seller, but I never heard that there are any such rights, and it doesn't help you anyway when you're in London and the seller is in Los Angeles).
Looks like it'll be a few weeks for the US to get unlocked phones
