Yep this exactly. I wouldn't want to put all the weight with the extra leverage on the taller iPhone, all on that small, thin, lightening port.
End of an era
The end of the dock looks like a materialization of the end of the "digital hub" model. The Mac was the spaceship and the portable music player would connect to it through a pod bay, like in 2001.
For me, the dock was really materializing this "pod" part of the name iPod. I'm French and Pod sounds like "Pied" (foot) - like in the word "pedometer". The dock really was the foot, a necessary support piece and umbilical cord for the device to stand and connect to its mothership, the Mac.
But now Apple has shifted to a new paradigm. You don't need to connect your iOS device to a computer anymore, even upon first use. It is cable and tangle-free with Airplay, Airplay mirroring, Airprint, iCloud, iTunes in the cloud. So it sounds normal to let the dock go now. It is too much of a symbol of the Old Days !

The reason why there will be no iPhone 5 dock is because the connector it too fragile to dock to, as discussed here...

I'd want a better look before jumping to that conclusion.
It looks deeper than the old plug, with the electrical connections at one end. If the 'body' of the plug is near-solid aluminium and keys in to the aluminium bezel of the phone it could be quite sturdy. The old connector, with all the weight going on the thin outer shield and electrical connectors, was hardly ideal.
If Apple aren't producing a dock then the most likely reason is that they weren't selling many.
What is disappointing is the fugly, chunky 30 pin adaptor - sitting that in an old dock and perching the iPhone on top is going to be precarious. I expect better of Apple - couldn't they have built one into a universal dock insert?
They could build a "lightning+minijack to 30-pin connector" adapter for use on older docks. That would allow for a sturdier setup + analog line out/headphone out. Seems like a good Kickstarter project. If the gentlemen who built the Nifty Minidrive for MBA/MBP read this...
Because I paid $650 for it and can't afford to break the screen if I drop it which will inevitably happen from time to time

I use my docks all the time. One on the bed side table and one on my desk at work. I've not actually plugged a cable into my iPhone for ages!
Oh well, hopefully there will be some decent third party ones made. I don't mind paying good money for a dock because I use it so often, and because my phone is never just put down flat on it's back, it stays in great condition.

That seems like a truly unenlightened comment man.
The lack of Apple's dock means there is now an ability for third party manufacturers to cash in and there is no longer a reason to pay Apple their higher prices for a lack-luster dock.
Disappointing as I find them useful but not surprising.

This posted rumor about there not being a dock for the iPhone 5 is false. I chatted with an Apple Specialist the other day about if there was going to be a new dock for the iPhone 5. Indeed there will be. It will be called "Lightning Dock" and it will only be available for the iPhone 5 due to the new Lightning Connector. It will be available September 21st when the iPhone is available to the public. What is interesting is that I chatted with a different Apple Specialist a day later and that Specialist wouldn't confirm if there was going to be one or not. Sent an email to MacRumors about this but I guess they figured this rumor was inconclusive. Time will tell.

Exactly the same here. It's very frustrating that they wont be making new ones. I was hacked off enough when they didn't include docks with the latter iphones.
Dock or no dock? I have a couple of docks at home, but I found I didn't use them very much. My issue was my bumper. I could not use the dock with a bumper on the phone. If I wanted to, I would have to remove the bumper and then plug it in. It just got easier to use the cord alone without the dock. The Apple bumpers fall apart quickly if you are pulling them off and on all the time.
Oh and the main reason I used a bumper? For traction. The iPhone 4S is slippery smooth. The bumper provides a little resistance, keeping it in my pocket better or sitting on my nightstand a little more securely. Plus I felt like I could hold the phone better. (Using past tense since my third bumper broke and I have gone without since my new phone is arriving Friday.)

Well this is a shame. I pop my iPhone into its dock as soon as I get home and there it stays until I leave.

Well, that is quite weird because Apple always promoted their "new technology" by all means - so the new dock should be first on the list of new accessories, I think...
How about to protect your $650 dollar phone when it falls out of your pocket. Besides, reviews have already reported the black coming off of the outer aluminum edge. A simple bumper would address this and preserve the beautiful design.
I can live w/o a dock. I bought one for my iPhone 4, but I've not used it in more than a year. The loose dock cable just makes it easier to dock any of my 4 iDevices.
I'd really like a bumper though. That's the only "case" I bought for the iPhone 4. I like it for the silicone edging that gives it more "grip" on surfaces, and in my pocket.
