iPod iPod won't mount, HELP!!!!

I hooked up my iPod (old 4gig mini) to an old 400 mghz G3, and it said it could be updated. So i did, it patched fine, then itunes started doing something, then i got the rainbow wheel, now it won't mount! Another new mini mounts fine, and when i check system profiler, it says its there, but my finder and itunes says its not there, it still will charge and it still says do not disconnect. Please help!

and yes i've tried hard reset.

Yes, updater recongizes it, but it says its not mounting and gives me the option of restoring it (formating)
