There is no terrain feature in apple maps.

businesses do not show up properly- annoying review site yelp is used for info.

oh and I forgot to complain about the enormous amount of interstate signs apple managed to put in. Where google maps would do with one, apple has three. highly distracting. And I don't want my maps to rotate. I'll use google earth for that.

I mixed up the terms, I meant satellite. Give it time to grow. Apple was kind of put in the position that they HAD to do something like this since Google wasn't going to give us the features they put in their maps app for Android. So the real question is are you mad at Apple for trying to remedy the issue or Google for being dicks?

Ok, well I've been ignoring this thread for the past few days thinking it was just going to be some overhyped problems in the new maps app and that it wouldn't really be as bad as what everyone is making out. Then I loaded it up...

This is where I live... fully zoomed in...

I know apple want to promote iCloud and everything but come on??

:D now that is cloud enabled

Sure. But until it does grow (which is likely to be a long while), a lot of people would like to have the Google Maps back. People wanting to use the navigation could you apple maps. Everyone's happy.

Or, with the better view on an Android device. Notice how public rail stops are listed, with the M icons representing CTA L stations, and the train icon representing Metra Commuter rail stops. Also, other items are nice, such as how the individual college buildings in the bottom left corner are labeled and drawn, and how titles are everywhere such as with street names, park names, museum areas, specific city areas etc...

Once again...nice try showing various zoom levels to remove detail from the Apple Map to make a android look better.

It is obvious that Apple chose specifically to show certain detail at different levels.

Honestly...who would want the name of some college building to show up on a map showing MORE than the entire area of the city of Chicago? Yet your map doesn't show key building landmarks that people might actually be able to see from where they are standing anywhere on your map.

Yes..there is less detail at this point, but some of the examples shown here are purposefully showing Apple Maps in a bad light...not sure why someone (outside of an Android troll) would care so much.

I'll try to continue to show REAL pics of maps from COMPARABLE views.

These maps are less detailed. This is a downgrade. How many years until Apple can dream of catching up? I seriously hope Google is making a maps app as we speak, then it doesn't really matter.

The new maps are shocking imo. The colour scheme is awful and you can't tell motorways from a-roads and b-roads in the UK. There's no pedestrian route and there's no street view. Also the detail is lacking.

3D city view looks amazing for the VERY few cities that have it, but it's more of a'cool' feature than a useful one imo. Google maps was much more useful day to day. I am hugely disaapointed and it's really taken the shine off getting my iphone 5 tomorrow :( I'd also like to put my ipad back to iOS 5 until there's a google maps app. The google maps on safari is hopeless too

I'm seriously considering cancelling my iphone 5 order and either trying to downgrade my iphone 4 to iOS 5, or if this can't be done then buying a 4S from ebay that's not had the update.

Dude go drink some more kool-aid. The following screen shots show maximum detail.

Tried looking up a business today in Apple Maps. First of all I had to enter the name exactly how it's spelled (that includes spaces) without getting suggestions.

Eventually I found it but the phone number listed was wrong.

With Google Maps on the other hand I was able to find the business within seconds of starting to type the name and it showed me the phone number that is actually listed on the business' homepage..

Thanks for nothing, Apple.

Maps in Switzerland: not great

As many of the commenters before me - I was very skeptical that Apple could pull-off a Maps solution right away... and I was sadly right. Perhaps in the US, the data is better, but for now, in the good old continent of Europe, I'm not really feeling the "Apple love".

I installed it on my iPad last night as a "test" before upgrading my iPhone and I'm not sure I can upgrade just yet...

To be fair, I didn't really expect it to be perfect, nor to be as feature and data rich as GoogleMaps, but there are major problems with it so far. Even simple things such as looking up "Bern" (Switzerland's capital - for those who might not know), doesn't point to the city, but to the middle of nowhere. I believe it's pointing to the "Canton" (State) of Bern, but this just isn't practical nor does it make any sense!

Satellite images are also poor (my hometown village has a black and white sattelite image for some obscure reason!) and the "standard" detail level is not good, as it shows no building placements.

Again, I didn't expect that Apple could pull it off straight away, but they clearly have disappointed many people with this update and they really need to work double time to improve.

On the plus side:
Contrary to other people, I like the color scheme and the turn by turn looks elegant, going the open solution (with OpenMaps) is a step in the good direction (but they have to ensure the info/data is up to par with other services.

Suggestions for the future:
- They need to hugely improve their database, detail level, satellite imagery.
- Integrate walking, bike, public transport with their driving directions.
- Make the map accessible through a web browser (apple.maps.com) and enable people to add businesses, images, etc. in a user-friendly manner
- have a similar service to StreetView (Flyover looks cool, but has limited coverage and limited use)
- find a "killer feature" that will make it even better to use their mapping solution

To those who will tell me "you can still access Googlemaps, by going to maps.google.com and make a home screen link": I know, and i've done that but it's not as usable.

The truth is I truly want Apple to succeed and create a FANTASTIC Map experience that can rival google's, but they seriously need to put their huge cash reserves into it.

Apple was not a mapping company, but now that they've released iOS 6, they better start considering that it actually has become part of their business and that they must step-up and bring it up to the high standard that they use for any other product.

(Sorry for the long post, obviously I feel strongly about this, as many others)

Yup, just got the same on my 3GS.

I thought UK maps were terrible, but I just checked out Peru - on my 3GS, Lake Titicaca has taken on a very strange shape
Water near me is wrong on Apple's maps. Two small streams that you would barely notice are shown as being much wider than they are. The only POIs are pubs, one of which is spelt wrong, and another in the wrong place. The A4 which is a major road is shown in the same narrow white as residential streets, ironic since the streams are 5 times as wide on Apple's map as the A4, yet in reality the A4 is 5 times wider than the streams. I don't care what anyone says about how great flyover is in some place I don't care about. The bottom line is the local experience makes it an extremely poor effort, and certainly not ready for public release.

New Apple maps app under fire from users

Inaccuracies and misplaced towns and cities in Apple's new map software have provoked anger from users.

In June Apple announced it would stop using Google Maps in favour of its own system, created using data from navigation specialist TomTom.

Apple is yet to comment on the complaints about the software, which comes already installed on the new iPhone.

TomTom said it provided only data and was not responsible for how it worked.

The software is packaged with iOS6, the latest version of Apple's operating system, which runs on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Previously, the system had an app running mapping software from Google.

But users are now forced to use Apple's new maps once they upgrade or buy the latest iPhone - which goes on sale on Friday.

There is not currently a Google Maps app available in Apple's App Store, although Google's system is still accessible via the phone's web browser.

Museum in river

Among the user complaints regarding Apple's maps sent to the BBC were:

Some towns appear to be missing, such as Stratford-upon-Avon and Solihull.
Others, like Uckfield in East Sussex, are in the wrong location.
A search for Manchester United Football Club directs users to Sale United Football Club, a community team for ages five and above.
Users also reported missing local places, such as schools, or strange locations. Another screenshot showed a furniture museum that was apparently located in a river.
TomTom, which also licenses data to a range of other mobile manufacturers, defended its involvement.

A spokesman told the BBC that its maps provided only a "foundation" to the service.

"The user experience is determined by adding additional features to the map application such as visual imagery," a spokesman said.

"User experience fully depends on the choices these manufacturers make.

"We are confident about our map quality, as selling 65 million portable navigation devices across the world and more than 1.4m TomTom apps for iPhone in the past two years reaffirms this quality."

Prior to the release of iOS6, several developers had expressed concerns over the capability of the mapping app, in particular its ability to find businesses via search.

"This is incredibly different from using Google Maps," one Denver-based blogger wrote on 13 September.

"It's a tremendous step backwards and something that cripples iOS for Apple's customers.

"I [searched] 'iPhone Repair' and 'iPad Repair' since that's relevant to our business. The results broke my heart.

"All of the work I've put into our local recognition is completely gone."

Obviously the bad press isn't going to change Apple's maps but hopefully it'll show Google how much demand there is for an app from them.

Thanks for nothing, Apple.

That comes from businesses being able to submit information about themselves to Google's business database. Apple needs to let businesses do the same.

Last time Apple got this much bad press we all go free Bumpers. I wonder what we'll get this time? A map and compass? :D

1. Apples further attempts to CONTROL EVERYTHING has turned into a disaster.

2. If I were them I'd be embarrassed that THE key feature of iOS 6 is half assed and Apple users are asking for google maps.

Seriously, I just read a story that the city of Berlin is in the wrong place or misnamed. That's like NY missing and in its place is Hodunk Georgia. These aren't little rural towns that all of 50 people live. They screwed up Berlin! lol

those of you chastising us for voicing our concerns do realize we're pissed over something we pay for, right? apple is compensated handsomely for giving us a product and then creating software and service packages to go with that hardware.

we're not complaining about the temperature or brand of beer in our buddy's fridge that he's giving us for free. many of us use this for work and are not happy with the reduced functionality for which we have been paying.

Apparently Maps is the #2 used app on the iPhone. When you mess it up this badly what do these apple apologists think is going to happen?

What I meant was that we can continue to use the web version of Google Maps and even add it as a web clip to the home screen, but there's no integration with the OS in doing that. Apple Maps is integrated, but Google Maps is not. If we tap on a contact's address it loads in Apple Maps, not Google Maps.

The solution of using the web clip is therefore incomplete.

I think it's about time apple opens up the ability to define the default apps as the end user sees fit. Dont like safari? Like some chrome, set that as your default browser? Don't like apple maps, prefer bing? So be it.

***** gone far enough.
