I bought it on my dummy line, activated a dumb phone for $26, it was free to activate the 5. Also they gave me a $35 credit due to other complications

I didnt get a confirmation yesterday so I contacted AT&T via chat and requested a text confirmation which I got immediately.

The adjustment amount however shows $38.44 instead of $36. Wonder why.. taxes?

Just got off the online chat, the rep gave me a bit of a hard time but I remained polite but firm, suggesting that I could easily return the phones and switch carriers, and she eventually gave me the credits for activating 2 iPhones as a "one time courtesy for being a valued customer." If they try and give you a hard time, just be persistent!

I just walked in the store and got my phone activated like activation fees didn't even exist.

Great tip, and thank you. I had 3 one time upgrades from 2 new iPhones and the S3 I tried out for three weeks before returning. Put "unhappy about one time upgrade fees" in the reason for wanting to chat, I didn't even have to say anything, the response came immediately after the rep signed into the chat "we understand your concern and be rest assured that we will resolve it" -- next line: "I can go ahead and waive it since you are a valued customer".

Easiest 108 dollar savings I've ever had, thanks for the tip!

Just call and tell em you will return the phone if you don't get the fee refunded and they usually give in. If it comes to it then ask to cancel your service and they ll put you thru to the retention dept and they all waive it for you. I've had them give me numerous credits thru out the years and even got a free Curve at one point

So far I calculate $1,398 in savings in this thread... Glad so many people were able to save some money like this. Giving it a gratuitous bump to help others, I think its worth it.

I had $180 waived, but it hasn't shown up online. He said it'll show up on the statement. I did get the transcript emailed to me and a text confirming the $180 being waived.

I called and asked for a courtesy credit of the upgrade fee due to my length of stay with ATT and the amount I pay, I just said I thought 36 per line was a lot, and they credited me for 3 phone upgrades and some tax.

I was surprised and happy....now If i can get them to waive the early upgrade fee....lol just playing, won that at the casino, I am happy.

Any risk of losing the grandfathered unlimited data plan? i.e. anyone not lose their unlimited data after doing that? (Don't think this would happen since I already signed the new 2 year contract, but I hear they try to kick people off the plan for any reason possible.)

Credit show up when you log-in to att.com?

Those who had a credit issued via chat. When you log-in at att.com and see "Your total balance is:" do the credits show up right away?

I was told that I was credited for my activation fee but show $0 when I sign in at att.com

Mine showed up about an hour later.

It took a little hustling, but I got it done as well. They originally said no until I told them I would switch to VZ. Just saved $108. Thank you OP.
