Alright.
So I recorded a video on my windows computer using camtasia.
I then exported the video in .Avi format and then transfered that file to my mac.
I now would like to converge it to .Mp4 format so that I can use it in iMovie.
I've tried using both QuickTime and HandBrake but to no avail.
It says that I do not have the required codec?..
Could someone please help me?

I purchase QT 7 Pro several years ago and it is still very useful. You may also need Flip4Mac's codecs to make this work.

But the cheapest/easiest thing to do is re-export from Camtasia as an mp4.

The reason I didn't export in .Mp4 format is because it wouldn't let me.
It only gave me the option of either .Avi or to edit the video in Camtasia Studio.
I'll try exporting it through Camtasia Studio instead of directly to .Avi

Whats the actual codec in the .AVI wrapper....AVI's can hold allot of different things, its like a .MOV. Try MPEG stream clip and convert to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) if your going to iMovie.

That's the problem. I have no idea what the codec is.
I just recorded it using Camtasia. I didn't download any additional codecs.
I just tried exporting through Camtasia Studio and it still won't let me choose .Mp4..
Does anyone have any recommendations for a free desktop recorder with decent quality and no watermark?

Maybe the software that you used to convert avi to mp4. not have the corresponding codec,or you try to you another software to convert avi to mp4 so that you can use it in iMovie.
