Apple pretty much blew it with the mini. Sorry but its true. Whether you consider the half assed scaled down from 9.7 inch to 7.9 inch apps that end up with text too small to the low resolution and contrast on the minis screen. This isn't even including the ridiculous price tag and outdated hardware inside of it.
The ipad mini needs its own app layouts and not just reuseing the 10 inch layouts most of which end up too small on the 7.9 inch screen. They should have gone for a closer to 7 inch size and had a 16x10 layout like the nexus 7 (with an atleast 1280x800 resolution). The ipad mini is exactly comfortable to grasp with one hand because its too wide. As far as the apps scaling thats Apples fault for messing up in the first place and not making iOS with multiple resolutions in mind like android, windows, blackberry, and pretty much any other os works.

Irony is the ipad mini probably has a higher dpi than most of your computers and TVs. The horror.
I would rather of a retina screen, who wouldn't? It's absolutely retarded to suggest apple didn't include it just to gauge customers.
It's about pacing the gadget market. Sell the ***** screen product first when you have a gimmick, then sell it again with "new features".
I have to apologize to all of the people that I questioned when they said that the iPad mini screen was terrible.
I bought the Mini and returned it within 24 hours. Why? It was smooth, fairly enjoyable to use, but that screen...the screen isn't just bad...it's horrendous.
I congratulate every one of you who love your minis and I wish you years of enjoyment, but for me I can't understand how it is selling so well.
I was able to return mine and leave with an iPad 4 for $170. That's a small price to pay for such a dramatic upgrade.
Again, it's just one person's opinion and I don't begrudge anyone who enjoys theirs, but I am stunned Apple put out a product in 2012 with such a porous display.
Is the iPad Mini screen really that bad?
Oh yes, absolutely. Only reason they get away with it is because they're Apple. If any other company would have come out, in late 2012, with a display this far inferior in resolution to the competition, people would have called it the end of said company. But Apple can get away with it. And I say this as probably one of Apple's biggest fans.
Only you can answer how it looks to YOU. You should try to visit Apple store to see for yourself because everyone has different eye sight and standards.
I know when I had an iPhone 4 and then bought an iPad 2, I hated the bad resolution.
Now I am used to nice iPhone 5 and Retina iPad 3. Will the iPad Mini look bad to me?
THIS. For instance, from the five minute look of the mini I got at an Apple store today, I thought that the mini screen was fine. But then, I don't mind occasionary reading on my iPad 2, despite having both an iPad 3 and iPhone 5. Yes, the iPad 2’s screen is not as good as the iPad 3 or iPhone 5, but for me, it's still perfectly usable. Other people feel that once they get used to a retina screen, they can't stand a non-retina screen. So only you can decide if the mini screen is ok for you.

Here is a screenshot from my Mini zoomed in way closer than anyone would ever be viewing this forum or any text. Click it and look at it full size. If it looks pixelated, you are extremely anal about things. The screen is just fine for most everything under normal use and I have an iPhone 5.
You got it backwards. Lower resolution screens tend to look better at larger font sizes. Zoom OUT to where the text is small and, especially in portrait orientation, it will be uncomfortably fuzzy.
