When I receive a screenshot from an iPhone 4S in a group message, I click on the thumbnail and it's automatically zoomed in. I have to pinch to zoom out in order to see the full picture.

I have a group message going on with two friends who both have a 4S (I have a 5) and all of our pictures are normal! So I imagine it's a bug on your end or the other person's end.
