I've seen rumors that it's purely an interface, which Apple is particularly good at and the current TV manufacturers are particularly bad at. But that runs against Apple's "hardware+software" model that's been so successful for them for the past 10 years.
I really don't see Apple doing a cloud-driven interface for an internet-enabled TV set and licensing it out like Google or Microsoft. It just seems so anti-Apple.
Sue me for being Mr. contrary, but why not just improve the Apple TV hockey puck to include Siri?
Because Siri is not very good in its current incarnation, and seems to be getting worse with time.
How will it get better by putting it in a big-ass TV set?
Quarterly sales are higher than XBox 360. Just to put these things into perspective. If any other company was selling this, they would call it a huge success.
an xbox costs 3 x this device and is substantially limited.
i want this to succeed but where does that leave those of us that don't want cable?
i would be interested in OTA and streaming video that is free with ads
FREE
yes FREE with Ads
i dont want to pay for tv shows EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are the wind beneath my wings.
...yeah, biggest tech company on the planet whos also doing mad profit quarter after quarter, year after year cant "deliver". ha ha. nice one.Nice to have a hobby when you can't deliver on your real job.
where's my iMac?
I wish these stupid rumors would quit already.
There is no such thing as "free". You pay $4K for the TV and get 2-year "free" content. Or pay what you do now and pay for the content. Either way there is no escape from the Content Man!
Whilst it may make for a good freeview box, are people seriously going to pay a big premium for it? The Humax boxes are great - they have iPlayer, Sky player, etc. What (other than iTunes and AirPlay) could Apple offer on top of that?
All I want is for Apple, Google, Microsoft, any company with a solid OS to replace that crap interface they feed us using Comcast, FiOS, COX, and Time Warner. Ridiculous load times, sluggish performance, and it's all poorly implemented and scattered. I would love nothing more than to see that fixed.
.....I much rather pay $100 to $400 on a killer ATV box than thousand of dollars on a display. Keep it simple Apple.
.....Let all the people already in the game make the TV hardware. Apple TV would turn ANY TV into an iTV. Let Samsung and Sony and Vizio fight over the profit scraps in the TV biz.....
How about you go old school and just stream all the itunes content ad supported?
Sorry Apple. I'll probably put some cash down for a flat screen this holiday season, which means I probably won't be in the market for another 5-7 years. Unless your TV is insanely great. Not "iPad Mini great," but something really extraordinary.
Fixing Maps should become Apple's new hobby.
Some things we can expect from imaginary Apple TV new approach:
- Premium priced hardware with lower image quality than actual Panasonic/Samsung etc. with lot of people screaming about "Apple quality"
- The same people who can't tell the difference between crappy 720 low bitrate streaming and actual Full HD Progressive content (see "useless" and "prehistoric" Blu-Ray for details")
- No need to look out too much for marketing, just put some "awesome" " retina" "best" in advertisement
- Naturally this hardware will last a couple of years, after that no updates, you own an old device.
- Content more expensive (see iTunes prices for details). Don't forget what happened with e-books once Apple entered that market
- 2/3 years of beta-testing (except that customers don't know that they're guinea pigs).
- If you experience any problem, just remember that "you're watching it wrong"
I've a feeling that whatever Apple are planning, it's going to be a product focused on the American market.
Fixing Maps should become Apple's new hobby.
However, with rumors that Microsoft might be buying Netflix...
