Seriously, why are they waiting until the new year to boot his ass out? I would have given him an hour to gather his keepsakes and then provided him with an escort out of the building.

You're kidding

iOS is bland and needs innovation.

Passport? Blah

That's not innovation. That's solving a problem nobody had

I wouldn't say bland. It's Usable for millions - Unlike The many variations of Geekdroid. Nothing wrong with the Android platform but I showed 5 different variations of it to my parents. And they didn't have a clue ( also to a 4 year old ).

The only thing I have ever shown my parents on the iPad is the Home button. Even then - it was just "That button at the bottom takes you home" The rest they figured out. Even printing and setting up a printer!!!!! Which has been the bain of my parental tech support life for 15 years.

Android is not as intuative and only made worse by skins and fragmentation and horrible design choices by HTC and Samsung - though it looks like Google are reigning that in - They should have controlled the UI from the start.

Look at OSX - they have made simple and nice incremental changes over the past 12 years of OSX and it works and users can pick it up easily...

Reminds me of this! Great series of videos How Real People Will Use Windows 8

Features on iOS are lacking however and certainly Could do with Gizmo's. Passport is ok - shouldn't have been pushed so much as a 'Feature' and just needs more companies on board. I suspect when Visa get their whole payment system rolling with RFID etc then Apple will use that as payment engine.

Can someone explain exactly what makes Forstall the next Steve Jobs? Or why people think he's going to come back and "save" Apple like Steve did all those years ago?

Why are they waiting a year? Because it is easier to keep tabs on him while he is an employee. If they completely cut ties he can go saddle up to any competitor he wants.

Because it's contractual. He's probably on a 6 month to 1 year Termination. And given he is still being paid a massive amount, why lose the knowledge he has on the process.

Also means he can't go and work for a competitor in that time - Gardening leave, as it known

I am pretty sure all he is doing basically kicking back at home and taking a call from Tim once in a while asking where he left the Stapler. Doubt they would let him near any actual code and I bet he doesn't have server access anymore.

Pretty sure it has more to do with non-competes not being valid in California. He probably doesn't have access to anything or new information on projects, they're keeping him on payroll as a form of paid non-compete, but his days are probably spent like you said at home.

I don't think he is the next Steve Jobs. Neither will he come back and save Apple. Steve (and Steve) created Apple. Apple is Steve's DNA. Forstall was an executive for the company who may have been favored by Jobs for certain things. With Jobs gone there is no one to shield Forstall for acting up when he should be working together. New CEO new mentality. Cook seems to be steering the ship fine for now.

I can't see it happening at all to be honest. By all reports he is great when it comes to technology, however unlike jobs did, it seems pretty clear he doesn't hold the respect of his peers which would be pretty fundamental for any come back effort.

While he has spent a good deal of his working life at Apple, I doubt he has one fifth of the emotional attachment to it that Jobs had. I really don't see him having the same passion towards Apple that Jobs had, even if it does mean a lot to him.

Also back when Jobs returned, Apple were desperate. It would be a huge swing in momentum for them to have to make a similar move to get him and outside of a technical role, I'm not sure what he would offer that the other executives can't. I'm sure Forstall will do great things, but I don't think he'll be coming back as CEO of Apple or anything like that.

Chuckling to himself because he's hidden the stapler...

So why is everyone waiting for iTunes11? Is there anything I missed at the iPad Mini keynote?

I simply don't understand how people here are writing so much about the intricacies and goings-on between Forstall, Faddell and the rest of Apple. How do you all know this?

Until we get established facts, I'm going to take all of this with a pinch of salt.

He has 75,000 restricted stock units that vest in 2013 if he is an Apple employee at that time. So I would guess that he is staying on to claim them. He was due 100,000 in 2014 and another 75,000 in 2016, which he won't be getting.

Hard to say. Steve Jobs left Apple because (1) he got himself in the weaker position in a power struggle, and (2) he was at the time that he left clever and determined, but also young, unexperienced, and to some extent lucky to be in the position he was in. The Steve Jobs that came back 15 years later was just as clever and determined, but he had 15 years of learning, 15 years of character building experiences, and he had grown up. If the Steve Jobs that returned had been the same one as the Steve Jobs that left, Apple would be history. He wasn't.

I think Forstall's qualities are not quite the same as Steve Jobs', and his faults are not faults that will be going away when he grows up - too late for that.

Non-competes may be invalid, but NDAs will be absolutely valid, so telling any trade secrets of Apple to the world would probably be criminal.

NDAs are not part of the criminal code, they're a civil affair. Trade secrets are also not a form of protected IP, so you can't get criminal infringement like you could with Copyrights, nor can you sue competitors for infringing "trade secrets".

And even if you can sue the one that breached his NDA, you can never get your trade secrets back.

So really, just keeping the guy around on the payroll, with no access to new information, is the best way to make sure what he knows stays with your business.

I wonder who's idea it was to lock iDevices with iTunes? That guy needs to be fired.

It was Partly a move to lock in the iPod to the ecosystem. Also because the Music publishers wanted DRM to stop Piracy. Don't forget Jobs was massively against allowing iTunes on Windows at the time - when the iPod was a Firewire only device.

And look what we have today. Windows phone is a closed ecosystem. Windows 8 appstore too. Amazon store and even Google play. they are all looking at the massive success of the iTunes store.

Even google are app signing now - because their devs are making no money because of piracy. Personally I think itunes is great... if you have a mac.. runs smooth as butter :)

So far all I can surmise is #1 Forstall came from NeXT and #2 Forstall was a jerk (like Steve could be) and #3 Forstall got fired from Apple (like Steve did) ergo he's the next Steve Jobs and will come back to save Apple like Steve did.

I guess what I'm missing is exactly what his visionary qualities were/are; where did he think Apple needed to go in the future? All that's come out is he supposedly sent emails to his team asking what they could to improve iOS and berating them for not coming up with more innovative ideas. Well as leader, shouldn't some of that come from Forstall? Shouldn't he be setting the vision?

Clearly, Fadell could have said much more about Forstall and their working relationship (or lack thereof) in this interview. But a polite "I'm not going to comment on that" would have gotten the message across in a much classier way.

I wonder if Fadell is interested in returning to Apple at some point, now that Forstall is gone. Or maybe he just wants to supply Nest thermostats for the upcoming spaceship Apple building. :)
