I don't think the app cards would be that useful. It's not like they were big enough to see what is shown in the respective app (I mean for instance read text etc) and I think it'd be more confusing than just having a little app icon. Confusing as in that the surrounding app card would make it harder to immediately recognize the app icon.
The quick settings, especially the brightness slider, would be pretty cool. But again, an even better place for such items would be the notification center which can be opened much quicker.
