Reader Sam Finale wrote in to point out a Tech TV story accounting Mac users' heated reaction to John C. Dvorak's unfavorable reaction to MWSF. Dvorak has long been dismissive at best with regards to any and all of Apple's product offerings and innovations. The video clip linked from the site above gives you a taste of Dvorak's less than objective evaluation strategy when it comes to the Mac.

It seems more and more users who appreciate Apple's innovation, including a large percentage of PC folks, are finding Dvorak possessing of the intellectual wattage of a wet match.

Is he really that bad?

I saw Dvorak on The Screensavers last night, and while he spouted a few comments that were obviously intended to antagonize the Mac faithful, he had very positive things to say about Apple and MWSF in general. He said he really likes the new iMac (although he wants a 17" screen), and said that MWSF was a really good show with tons of great products being demonstrated for the Mac platform.

I think the guy has fun harassing Mac-heads, but he still obviously has a positive opinion of the company and its products. I don't think he would spend so much time addressing the company if that were not true.

Uch, now for a real idiot, check out that story on ZDNet about how bad Apple and the new iMac suck. Maybe the article was a Win XP ad, and I dodn't notice? What a solid bunch of crap.

What a moron!

All three of those guys on the show were telling John that he was a complete idiot.

I really thought he does this to just get attention. But after watching that clip.... He really is a moron. He really doesn't know ANYthing about technology!

It's voices like his that ruin the fun for the rest of us.

Response thread on TechTV site

There are some rather intelligent sounding users out there responding on the thread trailing off that Tech TV article. Some gems:

Hay Jhon Don't let the apple loving idiots get you down. you are exactly on the money that you said about apple products. The Imac sucks And its design sucks it does look like a toilet seat. And the mac os sucks.

- - -

Praise Devorak! He's right. Apple just puts out pretty little doll toys, and then calls them computers. You can't upgrade them. You get what you get. John is right in his view on the Mac. You Mac lovers are just jealous cause you can't run a real computer.

Ahh, good stuff. I'd enjoy having a technical converstaion weighing the merits of different aspects of kernel functionality of OS X vs. Windows XP with a few of these clever lads. I would hope more argument than "the mac os sucks" could be mustered...

blakespot

You know I'd really like to see more about Dvorak and his history. When did he start hating Apple and why? (Earliest quote I can find from him was that MWSF '96 would be the last). Is it just Apple or does he gripe about everything? (I hear he had some choice things to say about Microsoft bloatware too) Has he ever said anything positive about Apple? (The only thing I could find was that he said Steve Jobs had a sense of taste, anomolous within the computing community and the reason for Apple's continued existence). Inquiring minds want to know - where is this guy coming from, and can I get a list of his greatest hits?

He wrote an awesome article praising apple for taking chances in design. He said he was tired of Black and Grey and wanted smooth and beautiful.

He always talks about command line and how great it is, which I think we need as a community to approach him about OS X being UNIX.

Most importantly, he had some positive comments about apple. He made some remarks before his big screensavers show.

The main reason why he bashes apple? If he bashed windows he gets a few viewers, if he bashes apple, he gets an entire community watching him.

Ratings make the ssale. End of story.

Everyone b*tches....

about the next best thing. Remember all the crap from the first iMac? Popularity made (most of) them shut up after awhile.

Dvorak, however, is another case. The poor guy sold his soul to Bill Gates, can you blame him?

Yes.

I saw him on sreensavers to and all I saw was a lot of ass kissing. It must be from all the negative comments from mac users that he recived that forced him to use his lips other than giving a round of free blow jobs to bad bad Billy Gates and all of his butt buddys.

Careful........

Gays may take offense at that. I prefer to think Bill uses evil fembots, or worse: inflatables!!

"where's my tire-patch kit?"

True

No its true they are good people and if I offended the gay community by associating them with Bill Gates then I'm sorry..

Re: Matthé

Nope the old iBook looks great, I love my iBook SE firewire edition :p (although key-lime was a big mistake - mines a grapite Btw.)

Computerware (RIP)

I heard a lot of :"Gawd, it looks like a toilet seat!" about the old iBook while I was selling them. Damn did that get OLD.

I don't get where these toilet seat remarks are coming from, have they actually bothered to lift up their ass and look at the seat before? Because it really looks quite different.

TO cryptochrome

The earliest thing I recall about Dvor-ACK dissing Apple was when he was denouncing "this thing called a mouse" and a GUI in general. That was 1984. He has been true to form and as prophetic ever since.

OS/2

Well, I know why he behaves that way!

Several years ago, like around 1995, I was listening to the radio show called "Tech Talk" on the net. On this show was Dvorak and hero Guy Kawasaki from Apple.

Dvorak defended himself, stating he was absolutely not a Windows lover, "No, I'm an OS/2 guy!". And look now where OS/2 ended up (no where at all).

That's why. He really is just jealous! I feel kind of sorry for him.

negitive personality

I don think that Dvorak is realy targeting the Mac or Apple spesificaly, as he has said good things about the new Mac, but for the most part he simply has a negitive personality, if you watch a few of his shows, you will see that he bashes just about every one that is open to be bashed, kind of a universal devil's advocate, its simply his style, and this is not that uncommon among many journalists, I see people like this on cable news channles all the time (Think Fox NC), so giving him attentio is exaclty what he wants, thats the way he makes money

COOL GUERILLA ACTION!

Everybody, let's do this!

Whenever Dvorak writes anything on, say, ZDNet's Anchordesk, let's all click all the _other_ liks to all the other reporter's articles, and so give mr. Dvorak's articles a comparatively low hitcount!

And while you're at it, do the same for long time Apple basher Charles Cooper. He's really the one at the bottom of the barrel, IMNSHO.

The Devil's Advocate

Now, I may be having a Senior Moment here, so correct me if I am wrong.

I recall Dvorak having a column, either in MacUser or Macworld, called "The Devil's Advocate". His whole raison d'etre was to be a pain in the ass and be critical of the Mac, not in a "Mac sucks" kind of way, but more of the "Dad kicking your butt so you'll do better in school" kind of way (regardless if that Dad is a technological moron).

If he was a technogeek, or otherwise highly knowledgeable of the techie aspects of Macs, PC's, or comparing them, he'd probably not be writing articles and showing up on TV. After all, TV may rot the brain, but the effects are far worse when you are on it, rather than simply in front of it... :)

Look at it as "entertainment value", kind of like seeing a movie because of that actor you can't stand but intrigues you nonetheless.

He's always a bitch about macs whats his problem?

More Chauvinism...

You are now proud of (i)Macs' popularity? I thought you guys were proud to be different, rather than being just another geek a ubiqutous computer stuff.

Why are you making such a big deal out of OSX being a form of UNIX all of sudden? I thought you regarded Mac OS (Classic?) to the the best of the best of the best of the...

Variety? Mac? You mean Macs provide you with more choices than PeeCees? Like professional 3D graphics board (No, Geforce3 is for games. Good luck on Maya for OSX)? Fast memory (no, 133mhz doesn't count, let alone 'New' iMac's 100mhz)? CPU choices?

Besides, not all the UNIX clones are created equal. OSX uses a micro kennel. Let's see how it deals with the inherent problems of micro kennel design. Oh, one more thing. Please forget about "the world's most advanced OS" crap. Please.

Yes, I use Windows, and I'm proud of the 10,000+ bugs in the OS, and how every week there's a new virus infecting my machine.

Usually when that happens I turn to my PowerBook G3 running OS X 10.1.2 and actually do work.

Better yet, I launch Virtual PC 5.0 and get work done that way. VPC actually runs Windows more reliably than my Dell Optiplex..

Dvorak Is Combative

It's obvious that he is combative, which is very much the tradition of muckrackers and baiters (not, debaters)... slamming products or his guests (on his TV show). He seems to be an unhappy person. Just my opinion.

There's your problem. You are stuck with a Dell. Why only ready-made, highly-dumbed down systems from Dells, Compaqs, and Gateways? Why are they always used as symbols of PCs, while most of educated PC users use highly tuned, personalized system?

Don't get me wrong. I'm a Mac user (Ti Book, 9600 Dual, and, well, a color classic) as well as a PC user (Athlon 1.4, Celeron 1.2). Speaking of 10,000s of bugs in Windows... how often does an app take down the entire system with the 'Classic' Mac OS? Is any of the Window bugs any worse than this? Besides, have you tried Win 2000 pro? You do some 'work' with OSX... Great! I wonder what you actually DO with that...

Your VPC 5.0 runs windows more reliably than your Dell? Well, I'm so sorry; you are just saying you have a real ****** Dell computer there and can't even fix the problem.

Virus(es)? Well, MS didn't write them. They just make the world most popular (yes! more 'popular' than iMacs!) OS, it's simply that most of the viruses are written for the most common OS. You think Mac OS (at least the Classic) is less vulnerable than Windows? Wooo... I don't know abou that, man.
