Mountain Lion freezes.

Suddenly, 2 days ago I have started to experience random freezes in mountain lion. The only solution is to reeboot. I maintain control of the curser, can move between desktops, but cannot control any apps and the curser beach balls. As far as I know the only identifiable change to my system around the time of the start of the freezes was an automatic upgrade to Skype. Because of the freezes I am unable to use time machine to attempt a general system rollback, but I have managed to downgrade the skype installation.

I have done a hardware check from the OS disc, all good. I have run Onyx and done all the maintenance I can. I have looked at console but cannot see any reasons for the freeze. I am posing below the console details from the last freeze. If anybody can see anything that is causing the freeze, I would appreciate any help. (I cannot post the console log from the whole session as it is too long to be accepted on the forum!)

Post a panic report, this one does not say much.

Have you tried to login into another account and see what happens there, if you don't have one create a new User Account in User and Groups in System Preferences, then log out and into new User Account, is the problem gone?

There are two(3) places.

/Library/Logs
~/Home/Library/logs this is the same as /Users/your name/Library/logs.

Just stay in the other for awhile, if there are no crashes there you know 100% it is your normal account where the problems are.

A panic should only be caused by a dodgy driver, a kernel bug, or a hardware problem - although it is possible that some normal software may uncover a bug in one of those components (e.g., the recent chrome with the HD4000 driver bug, pixelmator with the recent Nvidia driver bug, etc.)

Even if there is something specific to one account that is triggering the panic, the machine should only panic under the above conditions.

It shouldn't (note: that doesn't necessarily mean it ISN'T possible) be possible for an end user program to panic the kernel - the fact that you're getting panics means that some software component running in kernel mode is causing it, or your hardware is on the way out.






edit:
just re-read the OP - the machine isn't actually panicking by the sound of it - cursor still moves etc. hence there will be no related panic report to find.... the UI failing to respond is different from a panic.

Nothing new connected to the system.

The various diagnostic reports folders are empty (?) there is just nothing in them, unless it's hidden somehow.


I should reiterate, yes, I maintain control of the curser, though it is beach balling. I work in Fullscreen mode most of the time, and for example, Safari will freeze, I am able to move through the screens to my regular desktop, but then everything will freeze if I try to click on anything.

I am currently working in a new user account. I am also preparing to have to do a clean install of ML, so am trying to copy various files and folders from the original Home folder just in case..........

I don't have anything that looks like a panic report.

Just to be clear, the reports that I have posted are not any help and do not show anything. It is OK to delete them?

The current version of flash is installed.

I can't find any panic reports.

I hope I'm not speaking too soon. But it looks like the freezes may have been because the Crucial M4 SSD I have is starting to go bad. I managed to clone the SSD onto the original HDD, reinstalled the original, and so far no freezes.

Fingers crossed!

I have exactly the same issue but I'm still using the original 750GB hdd.
Upgraded yesterday to 10.8.3 but without luck, the issue still exists and it's been only 3 weeks since my last clean install :(. (I have a 15" Macbook Pro early 2011 with OS X ML 10.8.3)

I'm having the same issue. From what I understand, it's not hardware related. It is pure Mountain Lion suckery. It's related to the video card but I have found no solution. It's remarkable Apple could get through 5 updates without fixing the issue.

Mavericks is around the corner... hopefully it solves the problem.
