New hard drive still crashing!

Hi, hope someone can help me!

My 2006 MacBook was crashing ALL the time, so eventually I plucked up the courage to install a new hard drive to solve the problem. Backed up everything on Time Machine, reinstalled software and old files, and surprise surprise, the problem is still there.

So I guess I have copied over the bug/problem from my old hard drive to my new one?

Question: do I need to erase the hard drive and just start again (really don't want to lose my old files or settings though), or should I bit by bit put back my old files from Time Machine and see how it goes? Is there any way to find out what's causing the problem?

Also, when I reinstalled everything from Time Machine, it seemed to have lost all my original emails and contacts from Entourage - anyone know how I could restore those please?

1. I'm using OS X 10.6.8, Snow Leopard

2. The crashes are completely random. Sometimes the screen just freezes and then I have to re-boot, but mostly I get the kernel panic where I get the black screen telling me to restart the Mac. And sometimes the Mac just turns off and reboots itself from nowhere, when I'm in the middle of something. When it does this, it will reboot constantly, so I have to hold the power button to turn it off and then restart. It will often crash every 10 mins or so, then sometimes I have a period of two hours where it will be fine.

When I look at the report after my Mac crashes, it does come up with a list of things, but I don't understand them. The Apple store won't look at the Mac as it's technically 'vintage', and I would like to try to solve the problem myself without taking it to a computer store if I can.

Oh dear - I guess if that is the case then it's not something that's easy to repair??

Hi - so here's one of last night's crash reports. I had all three types of freezes: the spinning ball with no option to force quit, then Mac rebooting itself, and then the black screen, all within half an hour.

I ran Onyx to see if that would help, and it came up with this:

By the way, I also upgraded the RAM last year to 2GB, so that should not be causing the problem.

No, I haven't tried a clean install yet. I guess that's my next move? So would I have to do an erase and install with the OS X disc?

With regards to the RAM, that's an interesting point - I'm not sure whether the crashes started then or not, to be honest. But thinking back I think they probably started some time after the RAM upgrade.

Thanks, I will try that. I didn't run the hardware test as the Mac kept crashing as I was trying to run Disk Utility, so I gave up (!) but will follow your guide tonight and let you know how I get on.
