Hi, hope someone can help me!

My 2006 MacBook was crashing ALL the time, so eventually I plucked up the courage to install a new hard drive to solve the problem. Backed up everything on Time Machine, reinstalled software and old files, and surprise surprise, the problem is still there.

So I guess I have copied over the bug/problem from my old hard drive to my new one?

Question: do I need to erase the hard drive and just start again (really don't want to lose my old files or settings though), or should I bit by bit put back my old files from Time Machine and see how it goes? Is there any way to find out what's causing the problem?

Also, when I reinstalled everything from Time Machine, it seemed to have lost all my original emails and contacts from Entourage - anyone know how I could restore those please?

Thanks for any help, I'm not hugely technical with computers but can follow instructions!

You gave too little information.

OS X version, what are you running on the macbook, select About this Mac under Apple menu.
What was crashing, Programs or the whole system, most of the time things can be solved unlike windows.

If you had problems on the old disk and made a TimeMachine backup there is always the chance you get them back if you import everything again.

Now, you should say what situation you are in, do you get kernel panics, is the whole Macbook crashing or only programs.

Thanks Justperry:

1. I'm using OS X 10.6.8, Snow Leopard

2. The crashes are completely random. Sometimes the screen just freezes and then I have to re-boot, but mostly I get the kernel panic where I get the black screen telling me to restart the Mac. And sometimes the Mac just turns off and reboots itself from nowhere, when I'm in the middle of something. When it does this, it will reboot constantly, so I have to hold the power button to turn it off and then restart. It will often crash every 10 mins or so, then sometimes I have a period of two hours where it will be fine.

When I look at the report after my Mac crashes, it does come up with a list of things, but I don't understand them. The Apple store won't look at the Mac as it's technically 'vintage', and I would like to try to solve the problem myself without taking it to a computer store if I can.

Thanks!

Post your crash report here.

There is a chance you have hardware problems, you might try running Apple Hardware test.

I agree with justperry that you might have hardware problems. Especially since the problem appears in the reboot sequence. Your MacBook is old enough that the logic board could be going bad.

Oh dear - I guess if that is the case then it's not something that's easy to repair??

Hi - so here's one of last night's crash reports. I had all three types of freezes: the spinning ball with no option to force quit, then Mac rebooting itself, and then the black screen, all within half an hour.

I ran Onyx to see if that would help, and it came up with this:
/bin/sh:update-prebinding: command not found

By the way, I also upgraded the RAM last year to 2GB, so that should not be causing the problem.

Thanks for taking a look :)

The one in Bold is odd, syslogd is Apple System Log service and it should not lock up your mac but it seems it does, now keep in mind I am not an expert and I can be wrong.

You haven't tried a clean OS X install yet haven't you?

No, I haven't tried a clean install yet. I guess that's my next move? So would I have to do an erase and install with the OS X disc?

With regards to the RAM, that's an interesting point - I'm not sure whether the crashes started then or not, to be honest. But thinking back I think they probably started some time after the RAM upgrade.

Did you run Apple Hardware Test as I suggested before, if not do that first before anything else.
Then if it turns out clean do the following.
Reinstall, yes erase and install with the disk.
Then use Software Update to get up to date.
Now, before importing anything I would recommend you to at least run it for 1-2 days and look if the kernel panics reoccur.
If this is the case it's hardware.

Thanks, I will try that. I didn't run the hardware test as the Mac kept crashing as I was trying to run Disk Utility, so I gave up (!) but will follow your guide tonight and let you know how I get on.

Appreciate everyone taking the time to reply - thank you.

I think, but I might be wrong, that you don't understand.

You tried to run Hardware Test while using Disk Utility????

These are not the same, Apple Hardware test is not Disk Utility, Disk Utility can repair a HDD if there are problems with the Software on it, it does not check Hardware problems.

You should read the following link:

Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test

In My Post #4 I said:

Thanks, I did get what you meant, but thought I would try Disk Utility first in case it picked anything up – and because my Mac kept crashing I couldn't get back on to this thread to remind myself of the link you gave!

But will definitely give it a go tonight, thanks.
