And what are the Windows substitutes on iOS? Did all these Fortune 500 companies suddenly replace Excel with Numbers? Access with HanDbase?
It can also be said that they are a services company if they are offering a subscription based model. In fact they are with Xbox. It could also be said that it behooves them to get there subscription based model on as many devices as possible. Windows Mobil 8 ain't it.
Software is Microsoft's main profit driver. How they monetize through software is irrelevant, as long as they monetize.
Why should they cave now? They did well without MS subscription based model. It's Microsoft that has something to sell here. Apple is providing a large platform on which they can sell.
Because they're a hardware company that commoditizes software to sell hardware. This is why they have no problem dropping the price of Logic or Aperture or Final Cut a few hundred bucks if it'll sell more Macs but never cut the price of existing hardware until the next generation comes out. Software doesn't mean as much to them as hardware sales. Software is just a tool to make cheap and spread around so you'll buy more of their hardware, which is what they really need.
Microsoft is the exact opposite.
