9000 employes is two NYC inner city high schools. Not much of a reference point.
Fortune 500 companies using ipads

Yeah your link goes to Googled quotes from Tim Cook saying companies are testing iPads. Nevermind the details such as what companies or in what capacity

And what are the Windows substitutes on iOS? Did all these Fortune 500 companies suddenly replace Excel with Numbers? Access with HanDbase?

It can also be said that they are a services company if they are offering a subscription based model. In fact they are with Xbox. It could also be said that it behooves them to get there subscription based model on as many devices as possible. Windows Mobil 8 ain't it.

Software is Microsoft's main profit driver. How they monetize through software is irrelevant, as long as they monetize.

Why should they cave now? They did well without MS subscription based model. It's Microsoft that has something to sell here. Apple is providing a large platform on which they can sell.

Because they're a hardware company that commoditizes software to sell hardware. This is why they have no problem dropping the price of Logic or Aperture or Final Cut a few hundred bucks if it'll sell more Macs but never cut the price of existing hardware until the next generation comes out. Software doesn't mean as much to them as hardware sales. Software is just a tool to make cheap and spread around so you'll buy more of their hardware, which is what they really need.

Microsoft is the exact opposite.

Would anyone who wants to use Office 365 on an iOS device really be deterred by having to use a traditional computer or a non-iOS handheld to buy their subscription? Are there any would-be Office users who have only an iPad?

Probably not. But the issue isn't going bought the app or not so much as Microsoft doesn't want to do it according to Apple's rules

Does anyone care about Office for iOS? I can't stand the PC or Mac versions of the thing. I got tired of the 24-click emergency updates, the crashes and the annoyances and moved to Numbers and Pages...and lived happily, ever after.

Agreed.

Apple should consider some concessions here if it wants iOS to become serious in terms of productivity. Or it may stuck with Facebook, Instagram and Angry Birds for being forever just an expensive toy.

You do realize that going "Office for free", Microsoft would be opening itself up to a new anti-trust suit over attempting to illegally leverage their desktop/laptop office suite monopoly into a monopoly on other platforms as well. Doing so while specifically snubbing one of the two *main* competitors in the space would pretty much seal the deal, ensuring conviction.

The point of the link is to get of your a$$ and do you own research if you really want to know.

You'd have to understand how iPads are being used in big corps, which apparently you don't. The big thing now is not to walk around with paper. They want static docs they can look at in meetings, not reams of paper. They want access to their desktop, thus Citrix. They want access to their mail, thus Exchange or Good. That's just some. Find the rest yourself if you're really that interested, it ain't hard.
Is that a replacement for Office? No. But I never made any references to replacement for office.

Say that again...

Apple-Profits-500x355.jpg

It would seem Microsoft needs Apple platform more than Apple needs Microsofts Office products on IOS.

You are the clever one aren't you? Is that all you've got? When you have nothing to say...attempt to insult. Pathetic...

Perhaps you didn't get what I posted? I was not insulting you. You implied that Microsoft felt that it should get special treatment, my response meant that Apple does the same thing with everyone they do business with. I apologize if I wasn't clear enough and you took the post personally, that was not my intent.

SAS is one of them.

Also you do realize that many companies have apps or solutions for products that were MS only...CITRIX is one of them...they have mobile apps for all their back end software management programs. We use it for our scheduling/billing.

You said that companies are moving from the MS ecosystem to iOS. What are the Windows applications that are being tossed in favor of iOS substitutes?

Financial institutions around the world have no problem with Excel, graphs and labels.

They should, since Excel has several different versions many standard financial algorithms. None clearly documented as to how each specific version differs, and sometimes without *any* of them being correct.

Microsoft Policy - No MMO's on XBOX Live?

The irony here is that Apple in enforcing the exact same policy that Microsoft uses on X-Box Live. Know why there are no MMO's on X-Box Live, because Microsoft insists on taking a 30% cut of subscription revenue and in-game purchases. However, it is even worse than it sounds since they take it off the top.

Let's say you're Blizzard and you have a profit margin of 40% on World of Warcraft (not a real number, just making a point). Port it to X-Box live and Microsoft takes 30% off the top leaving you with 10% for yourself. They would make 3 times what you make. (Yes, you would have to take into account MS costs as well, but I can promise they are nowhere near 30%)

It makes me laugh that they are fighting their own policy.

Out of curiosity, which part of that are you rolling your eyes at?

This:
there is no need for MS Office for most people. most people can do just fine with Pages/Numbers/Keynotes. ...only the hardcore need Office or Android.

----------

Sorry for the confusion. The first "you" was meant to be generic, not you in particular. :)

Understood. No problem.

Full office compatibility and no stupid subscriptions.

+1..

I don't use Office... Heck, I don't even use Pages/Numbers, or any IOS-Apple iWorks stuff....... So really i'm a minority..

But it would be good, at least, to include something like Office WITHOUT having to pay extra for it.... You already pay a subscription for Office 365, with Windows, just to edit your own documents... If thats not stupid, i dunno what is.

Why should you need do this for IOS too?

So, why do you think most people need MS Office on iOS?

What is truly funny to me is that Microsoft will make a ton more money on Office for iPad than it would ever make on its own ill-conceived Surface tablets.

No. I can ask the guy who made a claim to back up his argument with proof.

"reams of paper" is not a Microsoft application. I asked the other guy to validate his argument that companies are moving from MS to iOS. Companies replacing paper with iPads is not moving from MS to iOS

Small companies stay small for a reason, usually from owners who don't think outside the box.

You're big deal is only a reference point for you and yours, not even a blip on the big picture and therefore not really worth mentioning in the context of millions and millions of Office and Ipad users.

What's with all these MR trolls? Did I not start my ORIGINAL reply with "I may be in the minority..." Go somewhere else and troll. Or at least read the forum posts BEFORE you post.

MR is full of trigger-happy keyboard bombers now.

Actually I just thought that it was too broad of a statement. Everyone's needs and wants vary. I think that there may be a lot of iOS users who would like to be able to use Office on the iPad.

once Samsung is willing to pay MS for having Office on their device.

They're money would be better spent diffusing the negative press regarding Android and malware so Corps wouldn't be so afraid to adopt Android.

Game console is a different game

This is the business model for game consoles, sell hardware at a loss and make money on game titles. Whether this business model can survive in the world of mobile game devices is wait to be seen but that is the way it is since first Nintendo.

just like most people can do just fine without rooting their phone/tablet. only the hardcore need Office or Android.

Most people have no idea what Pages/Numbers/Keynote are.

It depends on what users want. I doubt people need subscription based apps. Businesses buy site licenses. They use them on PCs.

Poorer companies use free software, or cheap apps they pay one time for.

Subscribe to Office apps for iPad ? Not so much.
