Internal HD/Enclosure for iBook ??

I've been looking at different internal HDs and enclosures for my G4 iBook (OS X 10.3.9), and found these two items: Maxtor MaXLine III 7L300R0 300GB 7200RPM IDE Ultra ATA133, 16MB cache, 5yr warranty for $177.00, at

Question: I'd like to be able to connect the HD (internal + enclosure) to both iBook and PowerMac 7300/500 (G3 upgrade). Would this be a problem? What about the size limit on the PM7300/500? I have slow USB on the PM7300, no Firewire. Running System 9.1/8.6 on the PM, 200MB RAM.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

You should be able to hook them both up, though with USB on the PM it'll be slow like nothin' else. I have a 200GB hooked up externally to my Cube which also has the 137GB limit, but that only limits the size of the drives inside it, so you can hook up anything external. I have it hooked up through a USB 1.1 connection (just because I don't have a firewire case), and it's insanely slow to backup files. Should fly with Firewire, though!

Edit: Oh yeah, also, I have that exact same Rosewill case, only mine is the one that only has USB, and no Firewire. It's a really great case, I highly recommend it!

HD Size Limit > Partitioning ?

If there is a 137GB HD size limit on the PowerMac 7300, would the 7300 be able to read 300GB, if I partition the 300GB HD into 100GB partitions? If not, then which 137GB will the 7300 read? the first 137GB? Should I partitions the 300GB HD with the first partition as 137GB?

First off, don't even think about it unless you get a Firewire card for the 7300. Also, you're not contemplating hooking up to both machines simulataneously are you? Good, I know you weren't.

The case seems a bit pricey, have a look at the MacAlly PHR-100AC

It should be less, and available at many Mac outlets.

The limitation of the 7300 is due to its drive controller (which is SCSI, so it's right out of the picture). The bridge board in the enclosure is in charge of how big a drive can go in there. If you are running OS9 on the 7300, ensure first that both the Firewire card and the enclosure are 9 compatible. (the MacAlly claims OS 9.2 compatibility as the lowest.)

Thanks for your advice? No, I was not planning on connecting two computers to the same HD at the same time. I checked the link for the MacAlly PHR-100AC, and it is $89.00. The Rosewill RX30-U2FA is only $64.99.

Also, The Rosewill will work with the Mac OS 8.6 and above, and has USB 1.1 and 2.0, and Firewire400, so at least I could use the HD on my old PM7300/500, via the USB.

I just ordered that Rosewill RX30-U2FA case today from Newegg for an extra 160GB WD drive that I have (actually it is in a Buffalo USB enclosure at the moment). I also ordered a Pioneer DVR-109BK DVD burner to install in an external case that I already have. With these I should be all set for video editing om my mini!

MacAlly or Rosewill Case ??

I just checked the MacAlly case and the Rosewill case. The Rosewill case offers more features. I would rather have the extra features for only $20.00 more!

That's the same thing that I thought, plus the Rosewill case has an Oxford chipset whereas the MacAlly does not. That to me is worth the $20.00
