Is there by chance a Apple Part Number on that disk drive cable?
Waiting to hear on the definitive type of tape used to close this up so I can replace the internal disk at some point.
But not really worth it, right? It's a $200 upgrade from the i5 to the i7 from Apple, so.... I guess if you sold the old CPU? But then you'd have to hope if you had a warranty claim that Apple didn't notice the upgraded CPU. RAM and hard drives are one thing, but.. CPUs? Hmm... Reading back it looks like he had one lying around, so why not, eh?
Still, very awesome to be able to do this down the line if needed.

Was this a Samsung 830 128GB SSD in there? I'm very intrigued by your benchmark results. Your speeds look great. For reference, I tested several Thunderbolt enclosures and got 360/320 read/write using a 256GB Samsung 830. So it looks like you do get better speed using the internal connection, not that the average Joe (me included, I'd wager) could tell the difference between 430/310 and 360/320 on a day-to-day basis.
Great work, by the way, R.OG!
Your correct, i'm currently testing the system with a 128gb samsung 830. Before i close the imac up i plan to replace the 128gb SSD with a 512GB 830 SSD.
Yes, but that's some expensive, nondescript tape. I'm sure I can find some tape cheaper, right?
Is there a problem with (re) assembling - TFT?

How come you didn't go with the Samsung 840 or 840 Pro? Came down to what you had lying around or was it cost?
I was able to reassemble a 2012 21.5" with some strips of 3m 4926 VHB tape. It's not the same tape apple used but it works very well. Hopefully someone will find the exact tape to use soon.
I just bought an 830 in the last couple of weeks, so for some of us it's not really about performance in its entirety. The 830 is a very fast, and - most importantly - VERY reliable SSD. The speed differences in everyday tasks between an 830 and an 840/840 pro would be negligible, and since the 840/840 pro haven't had enough shelf life to determine reliability, a lot of people (me included) have bought the 830.
The 840 Pro has significantly faster write speeds as well as random read speeds. When I am ready I am going with the 840 Pro but the 830 is great as well.
As I said, it's not proven yet. And I (like many others) have been burned by buying new SSDs and having them fail on me too early in their life.

I already own both 830 SSDs (128gb and 512gb) but as WilliamG said the 840 is not proven yet. I'm sure it will be just as reliable as the 830's but only time will tell.
Sure, as with being an early adapter with the latest and greatest you might have to deal with issues. Same with this new iMac. However I have read those initial issues with the 840 Pro were fixed with a firmware update by Samsung. Even a "trusted" SSD can fail. I would rather have the speed personally over worrying about what iffs. I have backups. I use a Amex which doubles standard warranty.
R.OG can you be more specific on what size tape you used? There are various sizes of the type you listed.

And how does it look when you close it back up? Perfect? Not perfect?
Cheers!

If the HD on the imacs where easier to access i would definitely go with a 840 pro, i would really be annoyed if i had to open the imac to remove a failing or malfunctioning drive.
Nice work on the tear down and pictures! Thanks for that.
How is the ram arranged when using 2 sticks? Every other slot or one slot after the other? Top to bottom or bottom to top?
Every other slot starting from the bottom.
They are all the same aside from the different widths. You have to cut the tape to fit the imac so it does not matter which one you purchase. The 21.5 " i sealed with the VHB looks perfect, not gaps are visible. The tape is a lot stronger than the original so i only used a couple of strips.
I'm right behind you, breaking mine open when it comes in! Is flash or SSD faster? Also, is the blade the smaller retina blade, or the larger 2011 air blade?
I knew those new imacs has some super special secret tech inside. Who knew it would be contained in a human hair!

can you zoom in on where the SSD (fusion side) would go?
So you don't see the temp sensor being an issue?
