LOL, no, I can't see the pictures taken of the tear down from this computer, as the site they are hosted on is blocked by our corporate filters. I can see them from home, but was interested as to the drive model. I actually wanted to see how large the cache was... Silly... But I wanted to see if it was going to be quick enough for windows to run off using bootcamp (I ordered mine with fusion) and if not I may get a thunderbolt SSD just for windows for gaming (which might be a waste)!

So for anyone that's interested, here is a performance review of the WD drive in the 27" iMac: http://www.storagereview.com/western_digital_caviar_blue_1tb_review_wd10ealx

Wish someone could find out the actual foam tape used. Grr!

R.OG is my hero right now, but knowing the "real" tape brand would seal the deal (pun intended).

Im with you, ive already got my 27" iMac and a 512 Samsung SSD to go in it, all i need is the correct tape to keep my warranty. That being said ive been very impressed with the 3TB fusion, much better then i thought it would be.

Given that Apple will get through miles of this tape a day, it wouldn't surprise me if the tape is a special/custom spec for Apple. That isn't to suggest however that you couldn't still get it from an authorised Apple specialist though.

Can anyone measure the thickness of the original tape with calipers? And maybe width as-well? It will help us find it or something comparable.

I wonder how soon until an Apple "Genius" or certified technician chimes in about what they use when repairing these machines?

Have there already been repairs? The 27in just started arriving last week. Doubt there have been any true repairs this early on.

----------

It's the "might" part that worries me. :D

A high-five to the first person who finds out what the tape definitely is.

Way are the chances that it is in-house/proprietary tape?

Yeah, but most likely a Genius has had at least SOME training (I know I know many are very untrained!) and most likely the tape they use would have already been shipped to the store "just in case" so they would have said tape on hand.

That's what I am thinking

Has anyone found a decent priced roll of this tape? The cheapest I have found it online was a 5 yard roll for $35.

The link I provided above to Sears is $24.66 for a 18 yard roll.

R.OG, dude, could you take a shot of vRAM chips the next time you'll disassemble your beauty? would like to know the model and see if it can be OC'ed to 6GHz without any trouble.

Next time a take it apart i'll take the picture.

----------

And this was in an external Thunderbolt connection, I think internal it would be even quicker.

In The Netherlands it is offered on many websites, but stock seems to be very VERY low with each of them.

I should probably pre-order soon so it will be here when my iMac arrives early January.

Grtz,

Thanks, i'll be looking out for it.

Looking forward to this!

R.OG just a quick question regarding the dimensions of the tape. What do you think the ideal width and thickness of the tape is.
I know you mentioned 15mil for the thickness, however do you think anything thicker (0.5mm, 0.8mm, 1mm) would work?
What about the ideal width? 10mm? Between 5mm and 10mm?

Thanks

The maximum thickness I would use is 15mil to 16mil (0.381mm-0.4mm) since the area where the adhesive tape should be applied is slightly recessed. As long as you use a tape that is thinner that the recess (15-16mil) you will not have a gap. The width does not matter since you will have to trim it to fit

How about 3M RP16 VHB Tape? 3M double-sided pressure sensitive adhesive gray foam tape for bonding a variety of substrates including many metal, plastic and painted materials. Thickness: 16 mil (0.016 in. / 0.4 mm). 3M website

I purchased that tape form my local Grainger but decided to go with the 4926 due to its flexibility. I have several samples of VHB tape and so for the 4926 is the best so far.

I can't find my digital caliper so i ordered a new one. Once it comes in i'll take some measurements.

I purchased my 4926 tape from ebay

Hi R.OG

I'm just wondering, from your memory, is there any room near the SSD to fit something like this (plus cable)?..

mSATA_to_SATA_adapter.jpg

If such a thing existed to fit apple's custom connector.

I'm sure a board that size will fit with the right cable. If i get some free time i will try to design a board that converts the blade ssd port to standard SATA.

You're awesome R.OG. I was thinking the same thing, it's a pretty simple project, but I wouldn't know where to find a pinout diagram (have toshiba published this?) or would it be easy enough to trace? Either way, better someone with confidence in this stuff does it, such as yourself.

This would definitely be the best way to go. A standard SSD could be placed in the HDD mount using the power meant for SATA1, but be connected to SATA0, where the firmware expects to find an SSD. This way, the diagnostic tools wouldn't throw up any errors due to no temperature sensor being detected on SATA01.

Also, I'm sure quite a few people would be interested. It would be cheap enough to make a run of 50-100.
