Since i have a day off, here is a little mock up comparison photo of what I think next years iPad models will be like.....same design as the current Mini, both with 2048x1536 IGZO Retina displays. A7X in 9.7 inch and A6X in 7.9 inch. Perhaps the size is not totally accurate, I was just messing around.
Nice mock ups, but the A6X in its current form is unsuitable for the mini. Much too power hungry.
The chances are if Apple can step up to Quad Core in the A7 line, then they wont need specific 'X' variants and it will be powerful enough to drive a retina display in both devices.
This should allow the Mini to not have to gain too much extra weight to include a larger than 15 watt battery.
It should also allow the larger iPad to be reduced in size/thickness as the battery can be made smaller if power efficiency has increased with the A7 line.
Both the A5X and A6X are unsuitable for a mini in their current form and why would they re-engineer them when a new chip would do the job.
Another reason why we wont see a march refresh. They don't want another A5X incident where they push out another inefficient chip before the new chip A6 was ready.
Projected Spring 2013 lineup:
$499 iPad 5
$399 iPad mini 2 (retina)
$299 iPad mini 1
predict and project all you like but when the company in charge of producing the 7.9" retina display have said Q3/Q4 2013 for production then the chances of a spring iPad mini retina is somewhat redundant.

How about a 16:9 version of iPad?
because 16:9 tablets in portrait mode look awful ?
