I hate dealing with cards.
I love the idea of passbook, but not the app itself.

Does anyone know of a legitimate reason why it is not customizable?

I have a library card, frequent dinner card, card for my local hardware store, etc etc. It would be great to not have to carry all of those cards and just use my phone.

Why shouldn't I be able to scan and enter these on to the app?

Call Tim Cook and ask him.

These things only work for people who can scan the optical barcodes. Not standard 128 barcodes.

Anything that uses a laser to read the bar, the passbook wont work with it.

You've been able to do that since iOS 1.0: scan the card and put them in an album (or albums) in the Photos app, if all you want is to simply take a photo of your cards and keep them on your phone.

If Passbook just took photos of cards, there would be no point to it since as I just said, you've always been able to do that. Passbook is an API that allows location detection, live updating of info (like flight gates/times, balances, etc), notifications, etc.
