Given that Apple still sells the iPhone 4, which is 2 generations behind the 5, would it be fair to assume that the 4S will still be on sale if/when the 5S (or whatever the next iPhone is called) is released?

Following past trends, it should available on sale at $0 on a 2 year contract on US carriers.

Yes, if all goes according to history the iPhone 4 will be dropped and the iPhone 4S will take its place as the free phone with 2 year contract.

I think it's safe to say it will albeit in an 8gb version. It'll be a good option for basic smartphone users. My girlfriend got the 8gb iPhone 4 earlier this year and she loves it. She texts, watches YouTube, the occasional movie and some lighter games such as angry birds. For that its fine and is more than enough for her. Capacity is her biggest limiting factor but she manages. I personally couldn't go lower than 32gb at this point. And that's a bare minimum. I'm kinda regretting not going with 64gb.

Apple retained the 16GB iPhone 4S this year instead of adopting a 8GB model may be due to the improved camera optics. 8MP photos and 1080p videos take up alot of capacity, so that may be a reason why Apple didn't downgrade it to 8GB.

I expect Apple to retain the 16GB iPhone 4S next year, selling at $0.

I think Apple will keep two form factors alive, the 4(S) and the 5. I don't think the current 5 will be sold after the 5S is released, just like the iPad 3 is discontinued as well.

After the 5S release, I think the current 5 will just be replaced with the 5S and the 4 (8 GB) and 4S (16 GB) will be left unchanged.

Thumbs up for this, 8GB can't do nothing for 1080p and hi res pics. You have about 5 GB to work with after iOS's reversed partition, throw in the apps and you're out of space for music.

Don't know how ppl work with the Nexus 4 8GB ver.

Right up until the iPhone 5 launched they actually still sold the 3GS

So yeah, I'm fairly sure when the 5S comes out they'll still sell the 4S, it matches their previous patterns.

I expect:
16gb 4S at $0
16gb 5 at $99
32gb 5S at $199

Well this is what I hope.

Um, what? The brand new phone, 32GB for $199?

It will be:
8GB 4S at $0
16GB 5 at $99
16GB 5S at $199
32GB 5S at $299

Yup. They don't and have never had an 8gb 4S so I don't see them producing one just to sell for $0.

Then I would hope for a 128gb top iPhone 5S and 32gb start. Especially since other manufacturers are beginning to put out higher capacity phones (for same or cheaper) with expandable memory etc.
