For now the Mini is running, primarily, as a media server that is also hooked up to a TV on the opposite side of the room. Now that there is a new SSD in there, I will prob end up using it more for primary computing while the Windows PC is just as a gaming and Linux box.

I initially also was thinking about a NAS for a rackmount I have, but the Mini wasn't much more, cost-wise, and could do much more.

BTO Late 2012 Mini

Super stoked!
$80 Craigslist 1080p 24" monitor
$180 Craigslist NEW 3TB TimeCapsule
2.6 GHz QuadCore, 8GB SDRAM & 1TB custom configred Fusion Drive Mac Mini FTW!

Really was struggling with all SSD (256GB) or Fusion Drive.
In the end, Fusion Drive won!

128GB SSD will be good for our needs since I recently scored a new 3TB TimeCapsule.

If I had configured it all SSD now, I would have lost the option for Fusion Drive, as on-board HDD is part of that equation.

So stoked, was the only missing part of total Apple ecosystem in the 'trooper household.

Always had hand-me-down PC's, so it will be the first desktop I've ever purchased :D

My first Mac

I've spent the last couple of days getting my first Mac set up and everything migrated from my old PC. Here's my setup:

What is the purpose of turning a monitor to portrait? I've seen people do it at work.

It allows to see more vertical than horizontal. For example, programmers want to see more lines of code so it would make more sense to turn it vertically. One could also use it so that less scrolling is needed for webpages or writing long documents.

Makes sense. Thanks.

It's great for reading A4/letter size documents etc. I have had the screens like this on my PC for a while and was really pleased to find it is supported in OSX too.

I also use it for ebook computer study guides, so I can have a full page view on the vertical screen while I am doing labs and things on my main screen. I'll be studying for my Windows Server 2012 Exams this way early next year. Kindle Study guide on the vertical screen, Vmware vSphere Client and RDP windows in Parallels to connect to Windows 2012 VMs on my ESXi server on the main screen. And of course the study guide on Kindle for iPad to take with me. ;)

Are you running nested ESXi hosts, with 2012 within them? or do you have dedicated hardware? I need to do my VCP, VCP-DCD, MCITP, never bothered and it's about time.

I just have one ESXi "server" - a home built itx box. It mostly runs a firewall VM and Windows Home Server which backs up the PCs in the house. Then there is loads of spare capacity to run any study labs I need. I have in the past run nested ESXi hosts with a virtual iSCSI SAN when I was studying for VMware exams but I'm not currently doing this.

My new late 2012 Mac mini...
  • 2.3 GHz Quad-Core i7
  • 1 TB Fusion Drive
  • 16 GB RAM (from Crucial)
  • Dell U2412M 24" monitor

Came in at just over the cost of a base 21.5" iMac and wipes the floor with it (in my opinion of course). :)

The Mini is the perfect server for my needs. Only 12W at idle means I can keep it in an enclosed safe without overheating. In fact, I used to keep a 13W heater in there to keep sensitive belongings at room temperature, so the Mac Mini is literally acting as a heater too.

While my computers and data can be destroyed by fire or stolen, I will at least have my backups and media.

It provides 24/7 access to:
A network share for backups
iTunes server to store and serve media
DVR duty using EyeTV software and a Silicon Dust network-based tuner
FTP server to receive footage from security cameras
A secondary computer to offload handbrake queues to

I initially considered a NAS such as a Synology, but for not much more money I could get a real computer with vastly superior OS and software, thus greatly increasing flexibility and capability. In fact, I am considering running a Windows VM so I can switch DVR tasks from EyeTV to Windows Media Center (WMC has no yearly fee for scheduling data).

The other nice thing about network storage is that both Windows and OS X can read/write them with no worries about whether you are NTFS or HFS, third party drivers, OS hacks, etc.

Do you really run handbrake while it's in that safe?? Is the safe to keep the fire IN? :D

I just finished my setup yesterday. I need to clean off the desk and finish organizing cables before I take pics.

512 GB Crucial m4 + 1TB Stock HDD
Thunderbolt Display
4TB MyBook (USB 3.0) for Time Machine
