AirPlay with MacMini and AppleTV problem

I'm having a problem when I use AirPlay from my Mac Mini (Late '12 model) and Apple TV (3). At the moment when I turn off the monitor of my Mini, I can't see a viewable image on my Apple TV. It just goes al blurry. The sound works though.

Anyone who had this problem and knows how to fix this?

Just to clarify, are you just using AirPlay for a video or are you Mirroring the desktop fully?

Also, what monitor are you using for your Mac Mini?

Thanks for your reply. Full monitor mirroring. Did not know it was possible to just airplay the video, is this possible with VLC Player?

I hooked up two LG IPS224 22" screens, but when i'm using AirPlay one monitor is shut down.
