A lot of you here (not everyone though) are quite bitter about this whole samsung product launch. This site is becoming like those anti android isheep circlejerk. Samsung has a new tv every damn year, just like how apple has a new iMac, iPhone etc every damn year. Why so bitter? If some of you have not gotten over the whole patent thing then maybe it is time to get over it.

Because quite frankly this site is called MACrumors and it even has a section for the people who like to use other products but this post has to NOT be posted there.

Funny how people like you like to brand Apple's fans sheep this sheep that just because we have an opinion.

2013 looks like the year for TV redesign . . . and a lot of it is due to all the hoopla about Apple's 'revolutionary' TV set. They revolutionized before with the smart phone, and no one wants to get left behind this time. Competition is good, can't wait to see whats coming next.

So - They built a wireless Smart TV. (I'm guessing this is obvious from the emphasis on the cord?) . Given the amazing "cough" response from consumers towards the "Samsung Smart TV", this is sure to be an apple killer lol.

The market doesn't want smart TVs in general, not just Samsung Smart TVs (and at least they have been doing something in this area for a few years, and presumably learning at each step).

This must be a major worry for Apple, as their differentiator will be the Smart TV aspect.

Luckily for Apple the market probably hates smart TVs because they're not simple enough to use, or overwhelm the viewer with choices and applications that simply don't match well to TV usage. Apple has a track record of fixing poor user interface experiences, so this is in their favour. However they haven't made their mind up with the AppleTV box UI yet...

----------

A entire notion of a portrait TV is just flat-out stupid. The human visual experience involves two eyes, side-by-side, for a horizontal panorama. Oh, and there's that whole gravity thing that means everything reaches a horizontal plane.

Widescreen is biologically and scientifically natural. Narrowscreen is not.

As someone else pointed out, the "portrait TV" is just a hint that Samsung believes that their technology will upend the TV market. It's not meant to be taken literally, as it really wouldn't make any sense at all.

However it does look like the TV is meant to integrate into your home environment (be it a cosy lounge or a frozen tundra) seamlessly.

----------

I've had the same TV for nearly 4 years and haven't seen a reason to upgrade. I don't watch enough TV to care.

As it stands I watch more content on my iPad.

Upgrading a TV after only four years sounds a bit silly to me anyway. What ever happened to people making a TV last ten years before moving it to another room to make way for the newer TV?

I already own the thinnest screen possible. And it's transparent too. It's called a movie projector.

I think 16:9 makes perfect sense, since TV is broadcasted in 4:3, so you have the choice between three awesome things: either waste about 60% of your pixels with black (or in LG's case, fluorescent light greyish blue) rectangles on either side, chop off everyone's head and legs (who needs those anyway?), or have everyone appear about twice as fat as they are (haha, at least that makes you feel good about your diet!).

Yeah, whoever thought that 16:9 was a good aspect ratio for a TV was probably a genius, which is why no one ever questioned it!

I doubt much TV has been recorded in 4:3 in the past five to ten years, to be honest, it's been 16:9 TV recordings for a decade or longer in the UK over most of the channels.

Sucks a little for the channels that show old shows as they have to remix the content - zooming, clever scaling, etc, based upon the scene, or just show it with borders. My ancient 10 year old TV had smart scaling (scale the left/right more than the centre of the image, to get rid of the "fat face" syndrome) for 4:3 content, and that was when 4:3 content was far more common.

16:9 in terms of your eyesight is far more comfortable - for a TV device anyway. I still don't think it makes a lot of sense for computer monitors where you are far closer and need vertical space.

Seriously, go back to 2003 with your 4:3 vs 16:9 rant.

----------

When 52" Samsung TVs first came out they were expensive. We bought one and 2 years later it died. I had to tear it apart and replace/solder some parts. I won't buy another Samsung as long as I live.

Anecdote. Could be bad luck. Was this a common problem with the TV you bought, or did you get the one in ten thousand with a dodgy capacitor/component?

The voice activated TV that you call out station numbers and it displays them in squares so you can see whats on and it takes video phone calls?

I can see it right now.

"TV, show me Sky Sports"
TV switches to Playboy Channel.

"No! TV, show me Sky Sporks"
TV switches to Home Shopping Network.

etc, etc.

Combining both comments above makes me wonder.

Pivoting iPad from landscape (video) to portrait (working/reading) makes sense. Why not adding this feature into your entertainment / living hub called TV?
It might sound stupid at first, but it does open a bunch of opportunities, doesn't it? Recipes & cooking stuff, reading magazines on a big-a$$ iPad while doing your home-trainer workouts, dual landscape screen for multi-playing....
and the full thing packed in a minimalistic frame with live-art for screensaver... I'd consider it.

LOL!

That is all I have to say!

If TV goes portrait which hell would freeze over before that would happen, I will gladly never watch TV again lol! We need to be going even wider, NOT less!!!

Here's to 21:9 :)

So the new Samsung TVs will catch on fire and spark in your face when you open them up? What's so special about that? All my TVs do that when I pop them open.

...actually, LG has a TV that comes pretty close to being that thin.

It's an AMOLED screen, so I don't know if they've ever released it or not. But it does exist in some shape, form, or fashion.

What you're missing is obvious. They SHOWED the TV on the billboard in the ad. And at the end it's clear the TV is not vertical… it is on a big stand.

Bingo!

To be quite honest i was starting to get a bit worried about myself. I mean, when you look at the add, when the screen comes ON you can cleary see it's just a vertical shape and the TV was standing on something..... just could't figure out what the heck is everyone on about!!!!

On the company's blog, there is a picture of a portrait-shaped TV that is taller than it is wide.*The television is depicted against an uninterrupted snowy background, possibly suggesting that the display is translucent.

Seriously? Isn't it more obvious that they are suggesting that the screen will have "life-like" colours, or that it will have proper glass-less 3D?

Seriously? A translucent TV?

The only thing that will probably be translucent is the bezel.

Until TV's move beyond the current pixel density, which is quite frankly atrocious, there's no reason to upgrade. My TV can handle "HD" content. It's plenty big. I don't need apps and clutter abound -- I have a laptop (and smartphone!) for that. I think any market calculations for a "smart TV" are rough and optimistic at best.

This "unprecedented" TV probably has higher DPI with upscaling and probably no/minimal bezel, and runs on Android. An important step forward no doubt, but not revolutionary by any means given all the previous failed attempts at "smart" TVs and the current status of monitors. Form factor wise, thinness and minimal/no bezel has already been demoed before.

EDIT: Almost forgot that 3D fad -- I hope that **** hits the can soon. I find it annoying and of sub-par quality.

His opinion, like yours is still valid. The fact is - this thread was posted here - not in another section. And I, too, find it amusing all the hate thrown at Samsung over the announcement. From some of the posts, you'd think "Samsung" came over and kicked their puppy.

I'm an apple product user myself, and I know that opinions are opinions (something we are all entitled to). Apparently, not everyone should be spurting it out of their damn mouth.
If you feel so appalled of the article being "misplaced", tell the editors who work tirelessly for this site. Scold them and whip them with your mighty whip of doom. It's not like they're doing a bad job of keeping this site afloat. Honestly, reading the comments clearly says something else, it's very obvious that a lot of these folks are bitter not about the fact that the article is misplaced, but for other bitter reasons. If you were offended by my statements, then by all means, allow me to apologize your highness. ;)

Why don't they do what they usually do?

CES 2013 promises to be very television-centric this year, with Samsung teasing a mystery TV product after reports that Intel will be be launching a set top box and cable TV service at the trade show.

The strong TV-focus of CES 2013 comes amidst persistent rumors that Apple is testing the waters with its own full-sized television.

Samsung recently released a new pre-CES teaser video and image of an HDTV.

On the company's blog, there is a picture of a portrait-shaped TV that is taller than it is wide.*The television is depicted against an uninterrupted snowy background, possibly suggesting that the display is translucent.*"A true innovation of TV design is coming up with an unprecedented new TV shape and timeless gallery design,"*reads the caption.

The image is accompanied by a video that was recently added to Samsung's YouTube page. In the video, an array of standard 16:9 televisions are depicted, both flatscreen and CRT, before Samsung's new television is displayed, hidden behind a white sheet.*A description accompanying the video again boasts of an innovative design.
Samsung often reveals prototype products at CES, last year debuting its "Smart Window" technology, which featured a touch-controlled interface atop transparent glass. Samsung could be unveiling a similar product this year.

YouTube: video
Multiple reports have suggested that Apple is exploring this market as well, though it is not clear when Apple will introduce its own television product. Apple does not attend CES and will not be making any official announcements at the trade show.

CES will begin on January 8 and last until January 11, 2013.

Wait till Apple brings out theirs, copy it, then tie up the copyright case in the courts for ten years till nobody cares anymore?

So you hate it because they copy but when they don't you still hate them and want to encourage them to copy?

Makes a lot of sense

Do you hate the parts inside your iPhone that are made by Samsung. Oh what a quandary!

Ooo it's going to be rectangle. Sorry I own patent on that!

it's all they know how to do when Apple hasn't set an example for TVs yet. Wait until Apple release their TV.. Samsung will have a huge range of similar looking alternatives lol

may I remind you of the obvious.

Apple pay samsung to have the hardware inside their design.
Samsung don't pay Apple royalties to use Apple design for their hardware.

got it? I hope so. There is no simpler way to put it.

Well samsung has been known to create gimmicky concepts in their attempt to break away from Apple sheeping. Eg. They remade their S3 to be more like the iPhone5 dimensions because they realised only after Apple released their iPhone 5 that you had to use two hands for the S3 to comfortably get around the screen whereas the iPhone 5 was designed for one or two hands.

Translucent - Can see whatever is behind so you will never get a clear image. People complain about reflection, now people will be complaining about refraction! hahaha
