2013 looks like the year for TV redesign . . . and a lot of it is due to all the hoopla about Apple's 'revolutionary' TV set. They revolutionized before with the smart phone, and no one wants to get left behind this time. Competition is good, can't wait to see whats coming next.

The market doesn't want smart TVs in general, not just Samsung Smart TVs (and at least they have been doing something in this area for a few years, and presumably learning at each step).

This must be a major worry for Apple, as their differentiator will be the Smart TV aspect.

Luckily for Apple the market probably hates smart TVs because they're not simple enough to use, or overwhelm the viewer with choices and applications that simply don't match well to TV usage. Apple has a track record of fixing poor user interface experiences, so this is in their favour. However they haven't made their mind up with the AppleTV box UI yet...

Widescreen is biologically and scientifically natural. Narrowscreen is not.

As someone else pointed out, the "portrait TV" is just a hint that Samsung believes that their technology will upend the TV market. It's not meant to be taken literally, as it really wouldn't make any sense at all.

However it does look like the TV is meant to integrate into your home environment (be it a cosy lounge or a frozen tundra) seamlessly.

Upgrading a TV after only four years sounds a bit silly to me anyway. What ever happened to people making a TV last ten years before moving it to another room to make way for the newer TV?

Yeah, whoever thought that 16:9 was a good aspect ratio for a TV was probably a genius, which is why no one ever questioned it!

I doubt much TV has been recorded in 4:3 in the past five to ten years, to be honest, it's been 16:9 TV recordings for a decade or longer in the UK over most of the channels.

Sucks a little for the channels that show old shows as they have to remix the content - zooming, clever scaling, etc, based upon the scene, or just show it with borders. My ancient 10 year old TV had smart scaling (scale the left/right more than the centre of the image, to get rid of the "fat face" syndrome) for 4:3 content, and that was when 4:3 content was far more common.

16:9 in terms of your eyesight is far more comfortable - for a TV device anyway. I still don't think it makes a lot of sense for computer monitors where you are far closer and need vertical space.

Seriously, go back to 2003 with your 4:3 vs 16:9 rant.

Combining both comments above makes me wonder.

Pivoting iPad from landscape (video) to portrait (working/reading) makes sense. Why not adding this feature into your entertainment / living hub called TV?
It might sound stupid at first, but it does open a bunch of opportunities, doesn't it? Recipes & cooking stuff, reading magazines on a big-a$$ iPad while doing your home-trainer workouts, dual landscape screen for multi-playing....
and the full thing packed in a minimalistic frame with live-art for screensaver... I'd consider it.

So the new Samsung TVs will catch on fire and spark in your face when you open them up? What's so special about that? All my TVs do that when I pop them open.

...actually, LG has a TV that comes pretty close to being that thin.

It's an AMOLED screen, so I don't know if they've ever released it or not. But it does exist in some shape, form, or fashion.

To be quite honest i was starting to get a bit worried about myself. I mean, when you look at the add, when the screen comes ON you can cleary see it's just a vertical shape and the TV was standing on something..... just could't figure out what the heck is everyone on about!!!!

Until TV's move beyond the current pixel density, which is quite frankly atrocious, there's no reason to upgrade. My TV can handle "HD" content. It's plenty big. I don't need apps and clutter abound -- I have a laptop (and smartphone!) for that. I think any market calculations for a "smart TV" are rough and optimistic at best.

This "unprecedented" TV probably has higher DPI with upscaling and probably no/minimal bezel, and runs on Android. An important step forward no doubt, but not revolutionary by any means given all the previous failed attempts at "smart" TVs and the current status of monitors. Form factor wise, thinness and minimal/no bezel has already been demoed before.

EDIT: Almost forgot that 3D fad -- I hope that **** hits the can soon. I find it annoying and of sub-par quality.

His opinion, like yours is still valid. The fact is - this thread was posted here - not in another section. And I, too, find it amusing all the hate thrown at Samsung over the announcement. From some of the posts, you'd think "Samsung" came over and kicked their puppy.

I'm an apple product user myself, and I know that opinions are opinions (something we are all entitled to). Apparently, not everyone should be spurting it out of their damn mouth.
If you feel so appalled of the article being "misplaced", tell the editors who work tirelessly for this site. Scold them and whip them with your mighty whip of doom. It's not like they're doing a bad job of keeping this site afloat. Honestly, reading the comments clearly says something else, it's very obvious that a lot of these folks are bitter not about the fact that the article is misplaced, but for other bitter reasons. In the video, an array of standard 16:9 televisions are depicted, both flatscreen and CRT, before Samsung's new television is displayed, hidden behind a white sheet.*A description accompanying the video again boasts of an innovative design.
Samsung often reveals prototype products at CES, last year debuting its "Smart Window" technology, which featured a touch-controlled interface atop transparent glass. Samsung could be unveiling a similar product this year.

Apple pay samsung to have the hardware inside their design.
Samsung don't pay Apple royalties to use Apple design for their hardware.

Well samsung has been known to create gimmicky concepts in their attempt to break away from Apple sheeping. Eg. They remade their S3 to be more like the iPhone5 dimensions because they realised only after Apple released their iPhone 5 that you had to use two hands for the S3 to comfortably get around the screen whereas the iPhone 5 was designed for one or two hands.

Translucent - Can see whatever is behind so you will never get a clear image. People complain about reflection, now people will be complaining about refraction! hahaha
