Well ive been booting off usb for years and ive never had it crash once. That being said i use high quality Enclosures.

I have booted to FW for many years when needed and never had an issue. I have booted a little to USB3 with no issue but 99.5% of time I boot to an internal drive

You have not been booting with a mac mini and a usb3 case for years. Not While it was at usb3 speed.
You may have used a usb3 case with a mac mini at usb2 speeds since usb3 case can do that. Usb3 mac minis came out this oct 2012.

I never said usb2 case did not work.


I said usb3 cases (I have 3 usb3 cases) have crashed more then thunderbolt with my 2012 mac minis.

to be fair my usb3 tests were done before the 1.7 firmware

So I need to test again.
Since that patch may have other benefits besides the black screens and snow screens.

I'm interested in knowing the results. I want to use SSD external USB3, if reliable, while waiting for a cheap pass-through thunderbolt solution. The mac mini has only one thunderbolt port shame on apple

Yes, the one you linked is for 3.5" drives while OP's one is for 2.5" drives.

Just got my base 2012 mac mini last week. Dropped in a 256gb 840 pro yesterday. I haven't enabled TRIM yet; I guess I'll observe my speeds over time before deciding. Also have 16gb of Corsair Vengeance otw.

Actually, I don't mind if they work slower than supports to work, as long as they fast enough for my tasks.

your results will be in this format see thumbnail. my ssd is a sata II with max read writes of 240/210 so my 220/180 is close. I am on a t-bolt connection which does lower speed a little.

Thermaltake slow...

Hi.
After reading what propower had reported, I purchased a couple of Thermaltake enclosures, but I am not getting the same speed readings.

The machine is a 2012 mac mini quad 2.6. I cloned the internal drive to a Samsung 840pro256 via thunderbolt goflex desk, took the mini apart and mounted the 840pro OS drive in the lower bay as well as a samsung 830 512 in the upper bay. The mini appears to run real fast with all of that plus 16GB crucial ram....
but,
when i connect the thermaltake (with a samsung 840 500GB (non pro) just like propower) i get way slower speed readings. Here are the blackmagic screenshots, 840pro 256 internal (top left), 830 512 internal (top right), 840 500GB external/Goflex Thunderbolt and 840 500GB external Thermaltake USB3.
The system shows USB3 as super speed btw...
Anyone have any idea why this could be..? Thank you all.

i also tried all the USB ports even if i knew it wouldn't make a difference, and of course it didn't....
i mean, 260/310 is still plenty fast for an external drive... but why so much difference between readings from two machines/controllers/drives that are practically identical...?
my mini is brand new and still empty. it is to be configured as a sequencing machine running primarily Logic and i would really like to sort this USB3 mystery out before committing to the process of installing/authorizing the s#itload of plugins and VIs needed.

ideas anyone..?

I have a quick question, I'm looking for a new mac and I'm leaning towards a Mac mini rather then an imac. Your configuration is something that I'm thinking of getting. Ill be doing some music production on it using logic 9 and Ableton Suite.

I was wondering what's better, your configuration or

Mac mini server 2.6, 16gb, 2 x 256 ssd ???

I read somewhere, that newer (2012) Macs have USB 3.0/Bluetooth shielding issues. Is that probably the problem?

What is the difference between ≈ 500 MByte/s and ≈ 1000 MByte/s in your environment? I doubt that it is a big difference.

Check out your CPU load while running both tests

I've seen your problem before. I think I saw it in the Macbook Pro or Macbook Air subforum. Can't really recall. Search the forums for "slow SSD" or something similar. They managed to fix the problem in that thread.

Just for comparison, here are the results of my Samsung 840 250GB (Non Pro) SSD installed in the 2.3 Ghz 2012 Mac mini...

is anyone else getting the same performance as propower with thermaltake silver river 5g USB3 and a Samsung 840 500gb?
yesterday I visited a friend that has a 2012 MacBook pro i7 2.6 quad and I hooked up the thermaltake/samsung in question. write and read speeds with blackmagic were around the same as what I'm getting with my 2.6 quad mini.
I also hooked up a crucial m4 to the thermaltake controller and got pretty much the same results with read speeds just a tad faster.

so, apparently the only thing that's different between my mini and propower's mini is that his came pre-configured by Apple with a 256 Sam 830 and mine is just a stock 2.6 quad that I upgraded myself.

wouldn't it be odd if it came down to that...?

I searched around the forum for other reports on the Silver River 5g but I can't find them....

I know this is an older post, but the problem is that the Agility 3 SSD's use very slow asynchronous memory that does not do well in Imcompressible benchmark tools like Black Magic. When it comes to Sandforce drives, only the ones that use Toggle Nand will do well in Black Magic (i.e. Vertex 3 Max IOPS, Patriot Wildfire, Sandisk Extreme, etc. etc.). Any of the others will do relatively poorly. The Agility line by OCZ is the slowest of their Sandforce drives.
